HAMMOND, La.- The Stephen F. Austin softball team (27-27) began their run at the Southland Conference Tournament Title against the Nicholls Colonels (29-23).
After one and a half scoreless innings, Nicholls scored two runs on the board, 2-0. SFA responded in the top of the third with a single from Kaylee Paul who was then moved over to second by Mikaelah Burkland, then Hope Lusk was hit by a pitch, followed by a walk from Ellie Vance which loaded the bases for Kyi'Marri Ester. Ester showed why she was named to All-SLc Second Team with an RBI single up the middle that scored Paul and Lusk, 2-2. Adelyn Becerra also showed off the pop in her bat as she smoked another RBI single up the middle to give the 'Jacks the lead, 3-2.
The 'Jacks extended their lead in the fourth as Chloe Reneau was hit by a pitch and Jamie Varga drew a walk which brought up Paul. Paul hit a hard single right back to the pitcher who could not handle it which gave Reneau enough time to score from second, 4-2. Burkland skied a sacrifice fly out to centerfield which scored Varga from third, 5-2. SFA did not take their foot off the gas as they continued to add on in the top of the fifth. Vance hit a leadoff single to center before Becerra showed her firepower again with an RBI triple down the right field line, 6-2. This brought up Reneau with two outs and a runner on third. Reneau reached on an error by the shortstop which scored Becerra for the seventh run of the game, 7-2. Nicholls began their comeback with one in the bottom of the fifth and added another one in the bottom of the sixth. However, Brooke Gainous came in relief for Alexis Telford and squashed the Colonel comeback quickly.
