Lumberjack Sports Performance
The Sports Performance program supports the vision to be the best mid-major NCAA Division I athletic program in the nation and be a leader in all that we do. We will be great servant leaders and teammates toward the individual and team development of Stephen F. Austin student-athletes as champions on and off the field. We will develop a comprehensive, integrated infrastructure with innovative approaches to strength & conditioning, sport science, sport nutrition, and sport psychology that are science-based, efficient, productive, positive, and fun. The sports performance program seeks to develop SFA student-athletes to their full athletic potential both physically and mentally.
All intercollegiate sports teams are provided access to the strength and conditioning training facility. Based on the needs of the athletes and sport, the designated staff member works interactively with each sport’s head coach to develop programs for participating student-athletes. Year-round training participation is recommended by this department in order to facilitate the best development.
STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING
TRAINING PRINCIPLES
- By thinking in terms of the following principles we will be able to deliver systematic, sustainable, and scalable S&C service to all teams. We will bring simplicity to complex by holding to these principles:
- MOVEMENT PREP – Each session will begin with activity that includes soft tissue mobilization, mobility and stability work, movement skill and neural activation
- POWER (explosive & strength), PROPULSION (speed & agility) & CONDITIONING will be trained and dependent on the variables that impact programming
- RECOVERY will begin as soon as the session concludes with deactivation activities and post work out nutrition as well education and resources to maximize time between sessions.
STANDARDS
- ATTITUDE
- Be a good teammate - hold yourself to a high standard, and demand high standards from your teammates
- Positive only- respect coaches and teammates. No negative verbal / body language, whining / belly aching, or spreading negativity
- EFFORT
- Hard work is not the same as working hard. We Work Hard!
- Outstanding effort is required- do not go through the motions
- INTENSITY
- Complete focus on the present task
- ATTACK with your best effort!
- CONSISTENCY
- Those who consistently (everyday) have great attitude and give intense effort. They demonstrate the DISCIPLINE (doing something in a habitual way), WILL, AND DEPENDABILITY to earn it everyday!

“As to methods, there may be a million and then some, but principles are few. Those who grasp principles can successfully select their own methods” Ralph Waldo Emerson
In order to enhance sport nutrition education, and provide a comprehensive, integrated nutrition model to make positive food choices possible for student-athletes to be their best an acronym that stands for 6 principles will comprise the nutrition foundation for our student-athletes. Nutrition education and access will be based on these six ideas and how to apply them individually, both to their sport and for life.
