HAMMOND, La.- The no. 6 seeded Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks Softball team (26-27, 14-13 SLC) begin their Southland Conference Tournament postseason run on Thursday afternoon as they battle the no. 3 seeded Nicholls State University Colonels (29-22, 19-8 SLC) in Hammond.
Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The Lumberjacks wrapped up their regular season schedule for the 2025 season over the weekend against the McNeese State Cowgirls and will now prepare for the Southland Conference Tournament as they seek their first conference championship since 2021 and their third tournament championship in program history. The Lumberjacks carry a balanced blend of both pitching and offense into bracket play on Thursday as they boasted the number four offense in the Southland this season and the number five pitching staff in the conference. The Lumberjack offense had no problem generating traffic on the basepaths this season as they ranked third in the Southland with 584 total bases, while their pitching staff had little problem keeping opposing offenses at bay as they threw seven shutouts as a staff, which also ranked third in the conference. SFA now looks to make some noise in the tournament as the sixth seed and exact some revenge on the Colonels who took two of three during the regular season series against the 'Jacks.
Colonels at a Glance:
The Nicholls State Colonels head to Hammond following a season that saw the Colonels compile a 29-22 overall record and a 19-8 conference record to lock down the third seed in the standings. The Colonels won three of their final four games of the regular season, including winning two of three on the road against the second seeded Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions to close out their regular season schedule. The Colonels offer the second ranked offense in the Southland as they hit for a .323 team batting average this season as they smacked 82 doubles good for second most in the Southland. Nicholls will now look to carry their offensive success into Hammond as they look to make their own run in the Southland Tournament.
Scouting Report-Lumberjacks:
Kaylee Paul's sophomore season could not have gone much better for the center fielder as she hit for a ridiculous .421 average this season and recorded at least one hit in 32 games this season. Ellie Vance formed a potent hitting duo at the dish with Paul this season as Vance turned into one of the most feared hitters in the conference, leading the Southland with 69 hits, and recording 21 games with multiple this year. Adelyn Becerra brought the boom in the SFA hitting order as she led the team with eight home runs this year, while Kyi'Marri Ester came through time and time again with runners in scoring position as she led the team with 30 RBIs. Ester, Becerra, and Vance's success on the field did not go unnoticed as all three were named to the All-SLC Second Team. Alexis Telford established herself as one of the elite pitchers in the Southland as she pitched to the tune of a 2.60 era this season, throwing eight complete games, and being named SLC Pitcher of the Week twice on the campaign.
Scouting Report-Cowgirls:
Claire Sisco raked in the hits for Nicholls this season as she slashed an impressive .453/1.220/.669 thanks to her 19 doubles, which were tied for most in the conference, drawing 27 walks, and swiping 14 bases. Molly VandenBout hit three home runs on the year to lead all Colonels hitters, while Erin Krause tallied seven extra-base hits and led the team with 41 driven in on the year. Molly Yoo was a workhorse in the circle for the Colonels as she pitched in 110.2 innings, threw eight complete games, and struck out 60 on the year.
Series:
Thursday's high stakes matchup will see these two Southland foes clash for the 48th all-time meeting, with the Lumberjacks leading the series 26-21 all-time to date. These two teams met earlier in March in Nacogdoches, with the Colonels coming out victorious in the series finale with a 7-3 win over SFA.
On Deck:
The Lumberjacks await their for the second game of bracket play depending on the results from their game as well as the results from SLU HCU matchup later Thursday afternoon.
