NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin softball team (26-27, 14-13 SLC) finished the regular season against the McNeese Cowgirls (37-18, 23-4).
The Cowgirls jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead after scoring two in the first inning and four in the second inning. SFA responded in the bottom of the third after Mikaelah Burkland was hit by a pitch, then Sammy Hagman entered as a pinch runner and stole second. Ellie Vance then singled to the shortstop which advanced Hagman to third. Kyi'Marri Ester smoked an RBI single to left field which scored Vance and Hagman, 6-2. McNeese tacked on two more runs in the fourth, 8-2. The Cowgirls high octane offense continued in the top of the fifth as they added three runs to take a commanding 11-2 lead and force SFA to score two runs in the bottom of the fifth to keep the game going. SFA threatened to do just that as Burkland and Hope Lusk drew back-to-back walks, but that was as far as the 'Jacks would get.
Top Players of the Game:
• Ellie Vance: 2-3, one run, two stolen bases
• Kyi'Marri Ester: 1-2, two RBIs
SFA will head to Hammond, Louisiana to begin the Southland Conference Tournament Bracket Play with a matchup against No. 3 seeded Nicholls on Thursday, May 1st at 1:00 p.m.
