CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks Softball team (24-22, 12-9 SLC) hit the road for the final time this regular season as they travel to Corpus Christi for a weekend conference clash with the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders (9-32, 3-18 SLC).
Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The Lumberjacks continue to feast on offense at home as they were able to grit out a 7-5 home win over the visiting Prairie View A&M Panthers on Tuesday afternoon at the SFA Softball Field thanks to a four-run third inning to secure their 10th home win of the season and 24th overall win. SFA's offense has now recorded double-digit hits in each of their last four home games, scored 30 runs over those four games, tallied 11 extra-base hits, and drawn 10 walks. The Lumberjacks have all but secured a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament, however, they will look to use their offensive momentum to improve on their current sixth place standing in the Southland standings, which starts on Friday against the Islanders.
Islanders at a Glance:
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders close out their six-game homestand this weekend against the Lumberjacks seeking to snap their current 12-game losing streak and keep their Southland Tournament hopes alive. The Islanders will close out their regular season with four straight road games following the series against SFA and will be looking to improve both their 4-9 home record and 2-14 away record over the next two weeks as they aim to secure a top-eight seeding in the Southland standings.
Scouting Report-Lumberjacks:
Mikaelah Burkland continues to thrive from the leadoff spot for SFA as she extended her hitting streak to six games on Tuesday afternoon, recording her fourth multi-hit effort during the streak, and scoring three of SFA's seven runs. Ellie Vance picked up her third straight game with a hit on Tuesday, and has recorded an RBI in two of her last three games. Ella Hill and Camryn Milley formed a dynamic duo against the Panthers as they each recorded a pair of hits, while Milley added on a pair of RBIs as well. Alexis Telford brought her wipeout stuff to the ballpark on Tuesday as she struck out five Panthers over four innings pitched and continues to pace the SFA pitching rotation with her 2.57 ERA.
Scouting Report-Islanders:
Paolina Baez has brought the pop for the Islanders this season as she leads the team with three home runs, is tied for the team lead with seven doubles, and has driven in a team-leading 21 runners this season. Mimi Thornton leads the Islanders with her .247 batting average, while Malia Williams and Kendra Winfrey have both pitched over 75 innings in the circle for Corpus Christi this season.
Series:
Friday afternoon's doubleheader opener will mark the 56th all-time meeting between these two iconic Southland schools, with SFA leading the series 31-24 to date. However, the Islanders won the most recent meeting last season as they recorded a three-game home sweep over the Lumberjacks. SFA holds a 18-19 all-time road record in Corpus Christi against the Islanders.
