NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The SFA softball team erupted for 24 runs in Friday's doubleheader against Lamar, earning a pair of run-rule victories to improve to 16-8 overall and 8-0 in conference play. With one game left to play in the series on Saturday, the 'Jacks clinched the series win, their third straight in league play.
GAME ONE - 10-1 VICTORY
SFA struck first in the second inning of Friday's opener, as a pair of singles by Alex Hedspeth and Marisa Arriaga got the 'Jacks set up with runners in scoring position.Senior Bailey Richards then logged her first hit of the day, a triple down the right field line, to plate both her teammates. Bryana Novegil then walked, and summarily advanced to second on a passed ball, which also allowed Richards to come home. After Camryn Middlebrook was hit by a pitch, Shaylon Govan connected on her seventh home run of the year, a three-run shot to left center, to drive in three more runs and push the lead to 6-0.
In the bottom of the third, Hedspeth walked, stole second and then advanced to third on a passed ball. Mackenzie Bennett's single to left field then scored Hedspeth for a 7-0 lead. A Cardinal error led to another SFA run in the bottom of the fourth as Govan came across the plate, and then Hedspeth singled home Gaby Garcia for SFA's ninth run of the contest. Finally, a well-executed double steal saw Arriaga swipe second and Hedspeth steal home on a delayed run to make the score 10-0.
Lamar tacked on a rule in the top of the fifth inning but the game was then called due to the run rule. Kassidy Wilbur (12-3) earned the win in the circle for SFA, hurling four shutout innings while scattering three hits and striking out three batters. Raigan Mock pitched an inning of relief. Hedspeth, Richards and Arriaga led SFA with two base knocks apiece, while Govan drove in three runs and Richards, two.
GAME TWO - 14-2 VICTORY
Lamar got out to an early 2-0 lead in the second game of the doubleheader, scoring one earned run and one unearned tally off of Reagan Chism (3-0) in the circle. Unfazed by the deficit, SFA responded with eight runs in the bottom of the frame, chasing Cardinal starter Breanna Rayna from the game after 2/3 of an inning. Camryn Middlebrook and Shay Govan got aboard via a fielder's choice and a walk, respectively, and came around to score on SFA's second three-run home run of the day, this time off the bat of Gaby Garcia. Hedspeth then singled, advanced to second on a passed ball and third on a Bennett groundout, and was driven in by a base knock from Arriaga one batter later. Amanda Carden drew a walk, then Bailey Richards drew one as well to load the bases. After Lamar switched pitchers, Novegil was hit by the first pitch she saw from Janelle Marwitz, driving in Arriaga. A wild pitch then scored Carden to make it 6-2, before a two-run double off the bat of Middlebrook made it 8-2.
SFA continued the onslaught in the fourth inning, as Richards singled in Lexi Benson (pinch-runner) to make the score 9-2. Another Cardinal error allowed Novegil to reach safely and Arriaga to come home, and an RBI walk from Shaylon Govan scored Richards for an 11-2 lead. Finally. Garcia capped off the surge with a three-run double to left center to score Govan, Camryn Middlebrook and Novegil for a 14-2 lead. The game was then called after Lamar failed to close the gap within the confines of the run-rule in the top of the fifth.
Chism earned the victory by pitching five innings of two-run (one earned) ball, scattering four hits and one walk across the five frames. She struck out one batter and induced 11 groundouts in the win. Garcia had a big day for the 'Jacks, driving in six runs on two hits, while Arriaga also recorded two hits. Arriaga, Novegil, Richards, Govan and Middlebrook each came around to score twice in the contest.
