NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The first rivalry clash of the season for SFA women's basketball will unfold in a Saturday matinee when the Ladyjacks face the Northwestern State Lady Demons for the 82ndinstance in the all-time series. SFA (11-3, 2-0 SLC) will be looking to earn its 60thvictory in the series, get off to a 3-0 conference start for the third consecutive season, and win its fourth straight game in the contest. Northwestern State comes into the contest at 6-8 overall (1-2 SLC), having won just one of its past four contests.
The matchup will be shown on ESPN3, with a call of the action provided by third-year man Bobby Mauro. Mauro's classic delivery can also be heard on the airwaves of Nacogdoches by tuning into FM Q107.7. Live stats links and game notes for the matchup are listed above.
One of the oldest series in program history, the matchup between Northwestern State and SFA has featured some classic games, with the Ladyjacks holding a 59-22 (.728) edge all-time. The 'Jacks have won seven of the last ten matchups, and have been downright dominant at William R. Johnson Coliseum in the series, with a 33-5 record there. Head coach Mark Kellogg is 4-2 in matchups with the Natchitoches natives during his SFA tenure, including a clean sweep last season en route to a pair of victories.
Third year man Jordan Dupuy is the conductor of an impassioned Lady Demon defense that focuses on turning over their opponents. Despite a tough non-conference schedule which saw them play four "Power 5" opponents, the Lady Demons have no equal in Division I women's basketball when it comes to turning opponents over, ranking first with 27 per game. Most of those come via steals, as they rank third national in swipes with 13.9 per contest.
While the Lady Demons post a respectable mark of 72 points per game on offense, their scoring defense has been a point of worry as they give up an average of 74 points per game, a figure that ranks 324thin Division I. The Lady Demons have also struggled on the glass, ranking 300thor worse in rebounds, rebounds per game and rebounding margin.
For the Ladyjacks, home court advantage continues to be a major key to their success. No opponent has come close than seven points to SFA during its 9-0 home slate this season, and the 'Jacks have a 23.9 point per game scoring margin in games played there this season. Emerging victorious over Nicholls and reigning Southland Conference Player of the Year Cassidy Barrios was aided by a big third quarter effort, in which a barrage of threes extended the lead for good.
Playing its past few games without top rebounder Riley Harvey, SFA has seen several players step up to carry the load, as resurgent play from Alyssa Mayfield, Stephanie Visscher and Marissa Banfield has given the Ladyjacks a potent starting five among top scorers Chanell Hayes (14.2 ppg) and Imani Johnson (10.4 ppg). Mayfield's big double-double effort lifted SFA over Southeastern Louisiana in the conference opener, while Banfield (18 pts) and Visscher 13pts/9 rebounds) helped the Ladyjacks over Nicholls. SFA is averaging 70.4 points per game while holding opponents to just 59.1 on the season, with those numbers changing to 76.9-53.0 in home games during the 2018-19 campaign.
