Duo combined for 46 of SFA's 84 Saturday afternoon
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The SFA women's basketball team had made double-digit three pointers on four occasions entering Saturday's matinee with Northwestern State.
Whether by virtue of the rivalry contest or a feisty home crowd, SFA hit the mark for the fifth time in dramatic fashion against the Lady Demons, converting on a season-high 16 attempts en route to a 84-56 victory. SFA improves to 12-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play with the victory, which was their tenth of the season inside William R. Johnson Coliseum.
Chanell Hayes tallied a game-high 24 points (5-9 3-Pt.) to lead SFA, while Marissa Banfield chipped in 17 points thanks to a 5-8 performance from deep, a new career-best for the sophomore. Imani Johnson chipped in 22 points, six rebounds and seven assists.
SFA would connect on a blistering 58 percent (28-48) of attempts from the field and 57 percent (16-28) from beyond the arc. The 'Jacks also tallied 25 assists on 28 made baskets, and tallied 11 steals in the contest.
SFA JUMPS AHEAD EARLY
After Northwestern State scored on its first three trips down the court and jumped out to a 7-3 lead, the Ladyjacks came to life in the form of 10-0 run over 1:41 of game time to take a 13-7 lead. Undeterred, the Lady Demons struck back with a 5-0 lead of their own to come within one point at the first media timeout of the first quarter. Locking down on defense, the 'Jacks would hold NSU scoreless in the final 4:39 of the quarter while scoring nine more points to take a 22-12 lead.
Fresh off Wednesday's milestone of breaking into the Top-10 in all-time made three-pointers, Chanell Hayes had herself a quarter with 11 points in the frame, including three more treys.
SFA'S PERIMETER BARRAGE
After knocking down ten three-pointers in the win over Nicholls on Wednesday, SFA wasted no time in punishing the Natchitoches natives from beyond the arc, knocking down its ninth trey of the first half with 1:23 minutes remaining in the second quarter. Five different Ladyjacks got in on the first half shooting barrage, as Hayes, Heaven Hamling, Alyssa Mayfield, Aaliyah Johnson and Imani Johnson each torched the twine from distance.
SFA's hot shooting from outside gave them a comfortable 15-point cushion at the halftime break, but an overall mark of 61 percent from the field in the half was a season best mark.
WEATHERING THE STORM
SFA's hot shooting inexplicably cooled off in the third quarter, as numerous shots rolled out of the basket. Northwestern State took full advantage of the circumstances to the tune of a 10-1 run over the opening three and a half minutes to trim the lead to 43-35. Finally the Ladyjacks broke through and saw some shots start to fall, embarking on a 7-0 run to create some space and extend the lead back to double-digits.
SFA's hot shooting would return in dramatic fashion, as the 'Jacks canned five more threes in the frame on the way to a 22-13 scoring edge and took a 64-40 lead after three quarters of play.
In the fourth quarter, SFA notched yet another 20-point quarter to keep the throttle open as Northwestern State accrued 16 in the quarter, keeping the visitors at bay.
