NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Senior Chelsea Raymond lifted the Stephen F. Austin women’s soccer team 2-1 over Lamar in overtime, scoring the game-winner in the 92nd minute at the SFA Soccer Field on Friday night.
SFA (6-2-1, 2-0 SLC) played the Lady Cardinals (3-6, 1-1 SLC) to a 1-1 draw in regulation to force overtime with the golden goal in effect.
The Ladyjacks outshot LU 21-13 and 12-5 on goal across the 91-plus minute affair. The Lady Cardinals held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
SFA opened with a strong attack, taking seven shots before surrendering a single attempt from the opposition.
Both teams combined for 17 shots across the first 30 minutes, before senior Zuri Prince gave the Ladyjacks a 1-0 advantage in the 31st minute on a penalty kick. The goal was the fourth of the season for the native of Beaumont, Texas, and the team’s first to come of a penalty kick through their first nine matches.
The 1-0 lead spanned the remainder of the first half and almost 15 minutes into the second half, before LU’s Jannet Hernandez evened the match by scoring off a corner kick from teammate Kristin Bos in the 60th minute.
SFA and the Lady Cardinals played the remaining 30 minutes of regulation without result to force overtime, before Raymond’s golden goal just 1:04 into the extra period haulted the match in the Ladyjacks’ favor.
Senio Morgan Glick (4-2-1) picked up her fourth win of the season, making four save and working around one goal across the full time in the net for SFA.
The Ladyjacks will now begin preparation for Houston Baptist. SFA will visit Houston on Friday, Oct. 3, for a 7:00 p.m. match Randy and Cheryl Sorrels Field.
Postgame Quotes:
Head Coach Wally Crittenden:
Crittenden’s opening statement:
“It was a great result on the home field for our home conference opener. Lamar came here with great purpose and they played in a way that really demanded our best from a possession standpoint. I thought we possessed the ball and managed the game well in the first half. We definitely saw momentum shift going into the second half and then our upperclassmen responded.
“It was a fantastic goal on the penalty kick – the drive that Jasmine White had there to get in the box and draw the penalty was fantastic. Then the finish by Zuri was very good.
“The game-winner by Chelsea was huge. You have your senior scoring a big goal to get the result. The fans will leave here excited, as they should. It was a great atmosphere. There were a bunch of people here which was great to see.
“Ultimately, we have to clean some things up. These first few weeks of conference, every team has a renewed sense of purpose and every team is in the hunt now regardless of their non-conference schedule, so games are going to be tight here at the beginning of the conference season.”
Crittenden on team:
We went into the second half and things weren’t coming as easily as maybe we had hoped. We began to lose our identity in the attack, but the response from our players was fantastic at the end of regulation. Their commitment, their energy and their renewed sense of purpose was what put them in a position to win the game.
Senior forward Chelsea Raymond:
Raymond on game-winner:
“I had the open shot and saw the keeper come out a little high so I just tried to put it over her head. Having an opportunity like that from just outside the box – I’m just glad that I could put it away to help the team get the win.”
