SFA Soccer battles back from halftime deficit to defeat Jackson State behind pair of goals from Chappelle
NACOGDOCHES, Texas — SFA defeated Jackson State 4-2 on Sunday. The Ladyjacks' second-half comeback came from the foot of Alyce Chappelle, who scored off an Amélie Prié assist at 77:31 to put the Ladyjacks ahead 3-2 in a three-goal second half.
SFA opened the first half with the first goal at 17:22, as defender Sydney Williams finished senior Lucie Platt's corner kick for an early 1-0 lead. The goal came after SFA created looks from Sawyer Kohutek, Platt off the woodwork, and Savanna Oberholtzer, but Jackson State answered with goals at 23:14 and 26:51 to take a quick 2-1 lead. SFA generated another cluster of chances after that, including shots from BB Bonzheim, Chappelle, and Keira Truofreh around a corner kick, but went into halftime down 2-1.
SFA responded in the second half, with Oberholtzer scoring from Platt's second assist at 51:38 to tie it 2-2. SFA followed with sustained pressure, taking six shots and two corner kicks from 59:54 to 69:42. Chappelle then took advantage of a through ball from Prié, who won her duel against a Lady Tiger midfielder, and finished the chance at 77:31 to put the Jacks ahead 3-2. Chappelle added another goal at 88:56, as SFA finished off the 4-2 win over Jackson State. Goalkeeper Savannah Epting entered play for the Jacks at the start of the second half, collecting one save and helping the Ladyjacks backline preserve a second -half shutout over the final 45 minutes as Epting picked up her first win in net for the 2026 season.
Chappelle scored twice, including the game-winning goal, and matched the team high with four shots. Platt recorded two assists and added three shots, putting one on goal. Oberholtzer scored on one of her four shots and led SFA with three shots on goal. Williams converted her only shot into a goal for the Ladyjacks in their win today.
SFA improves to 3-6-0 overall, as Jackson State moves to 1-6-0 on the season.

Following the 4-2 victory over the Lady Tigers, Ashley Whittemore reflected on the team's ability to battle through a physical match in the heat.
"Today was a tough one; it was one of those games you had to grind out, especially in the heat and tough competition. It was a very physical game, but at the end of the day we are very happy with the team and how they responded."
Whittemore credited the SFA goalkeepers and backline for their second-half performance, which helped the Ladyjacks shut out the Tigers over the final 45 minutes.
"Our backline has been solid, and our goalkeeping staff all together has been really good. They put their necks out there and worked really hard, playing very clean and organized."
Whittemore also highlighted the team's defensive adjustments after allowing two goals on set pieces in the opening half.
"We cleaned up in the second half after letting up two goals on set pieces. Our pressure as a team didn't allow them to create any more set pieces or shots, so that helped our momentum for the rest of the match."
