HOUSTON, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin women’s soccer team became the only remaining unbeaten member of the Southland Conference with a 2-0 shutout of Houston Baptist on Friday night at Sorrels Field.
The Ladyjacks (7-2-1, 3-0 SLC) and HBU (2-6-3, 1-1-2 SLC) entered the match as the only two unbeaten teams in league play, before SFA handed the Huskies their first defeat.
The Ladyjacks controlled the ball, holding an 18-8 lead in shots and an 8-3 mark in shots on goal.
Senior forward Chelsea Raymond scored what later proved to be the game-winner, beating Husky keeper Patty Walrath (2-5-2) with a strike in the fifth minute on a feed from senior Zuri Prince. With the goal, Raymond notched the 46th of her career, moving the SFA all-time points record to 104 points (46 goals, 12 assists). Prince recorded her team-leading sixth assist of the season and 19th of her career.
Sophomore Amanda Doyle added an insurance goal in the 48th minute, creating an opportunity from ball movement by both Raymond and freshman Hanna Barker to give the Ladyjacks a 2-0 cushion early in the second half. Barker and Raymond were each credited with the assist.
Senior goalkeeper Morgan Glick (5-2-1) picked up her third straight win in the net, making three saves over the full 90 minutes between the posts.
SFA will now return to Nacogdoches to host Piney Woods rival Sam Houston State on Sunday. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. and will serve as “Kid’s Day” at the SFA Soccer Field.
