FORT WORTH, Texas - Stephen F. Austin took a 1-1 tie to halftime against TCU Friday night, but the Horned Frogs' Jordan Calhoun posted a hat trick to lead a second-half onslaught that saw TCU come back for a 5-2 victory.
The loss moves SFA to 3-6-0 on the season, while TCU improves to 6-4-0.
"We are as frustrated and disappointed in ourselves as you can get," said SFA head coach George Van Linder. "We out-shot them and certainly created enough chances to win the game."
TCU got on the board in the 22nd minute when Lizzy Karoly found the net from just outside the left corner of the six-yard box. The play started when Kristen Halverson's shot from 12 yards out was deflected. SFA was unable to clear the ball, and Jordan Calhoun slipped a pass out to Karoly in space.
SFA had a prime chance to answer on the restart. Senior Megan Cash tried to finish off a run down the center of the field with a header, but her shot just missed high.
The Ladyjacks didn't have to wait much longer to tie the score, though. Freshman midfielder Kylie Louw took a pass from Cash and finished with a shot from the top right corner of the 18-yard box in the 28th minute. The goal was Louw's third of the season and marked SFA's first scoring strike against the Horned Frogs since 1997.
The score remained tied at the break, as SFA out-shot TCU, 8-5, in the first half with a 4-2 edge in shots on goal. The Ladyjacks also earned three corner kicks in the opening period against none for the Frogs.
But Calhoun broke the tie early in the second half. She scored with a high shot off the post from 20 yards out in the 49th minute.
SFA junior Kim Kimmel fired off two shots in the next 14 minutes, one of which was on goal, but Calhoun scored again in the 63rd minute. This time it was Karoly finding Calhoun open for another carom off the far post.
Katie Taylor scored TCU's fourth goal in the 79th minute on a direct kick from 25 yards out. Calhoun finished off her hat trick with a goal off a deflection following a corner kick in the 83rd minute.
"We had a couple of let-downs, and credit TCU; they capitalized on their chances where we didn't," Van Linder said.
SFA freshman Jayne Jahnke set the final count when she scored in an empty net off a deflection in the 88th minute.
Louw finished with six shots in all and recorded three of SFA's 10 shots on goal. For the game, the Ladyjacks out-shot TCU, 12-6, and finished with a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. This marks just the third time all season for a Horned Frogs opponent to finish with an edge in shot attempts.
Freshman goalkeeper Rachael Stelly (0-1-0) played the second half to take her first decision of the season. Junior Courtney Bauder started the game in net and registered one save in the first 45 minutes.
With the win, TCU moves to 6-0-0, all-time, against the Ladyjacks.
"We are proud of our team's effort, and many of the SFA fans came up after the game and said the same thing," Van Linder said. "We are just disappointed that we didn't get what we were hoping for -- a win."
SFA will resume play next weekend when the Ladyjacks open the Southland Conference slate with road games against Lamar and McNeese State.
