BEAUMONT, Texas - Jess Brown scored her first career goal 107 minutes into Friday's Southland Conference opener at Lamar, giving SFA a 2-1 victory in double-overtime. The verdict extends the Ladyjacks' streak of Southland-opening wins to eight straight and moves SFA to 4-6-0 on the season.
Brown's goal came on an assist by senior forward Megan Cash. The freshman from College Station, Texas, headed home the game-winner after Cash delivered a nice crossing pass. Brown is the sixth Ladyjack to post her first career goal this season.
"Credit Lamar for taking us out of our game, which frustrated our team because we know better than to let that happen," SFA head coach George Van Linder said. "I was very happy with the spirit of the team late in the game. It was a gritty, gutsy win."
SFA got out to a 1-0 lead against the Cardinals when freshman Kylie Louw scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 42nd minute. The scoring play followed a corner kick with Louw finishing off a loose ball in the box.
The Ladyjacks carried their 1-0 lead to halftime despite a dead heat in shots with each team posting nine in the first period. Lamar held a 4-3 edge in shots on goal at the break.
SFA reversed that advantage in the second half, posting six shots on goal to three for the Cardinals, but Lamar managed to tie the score in the 78th minute on a goal by Beth Squires.
The Ladyjacks out-shot Lamar, 8-1, in the two overtime periods and put six shots on goal to one for the Cardinals. The late aggression paid off with Brown's game-winner.
For the game, SFA out-shot the Cardinals, 25-18, with 15 shots on goal to eight for Lamar.
Junior Courtney Bauder (3-5-0) started in net for SFA and played all 107 minutes, recording a season-high seven saves.
Junior Kim Kimmel took six shots with three on goal, edging Louw's five shots for the team-high. Cash and freshman Laura Sadler posted three shots each.
Friday's victory improves the Ladyjacks to 3-0-0, all-time against Lamar.
SFA will continue its two-game Southland-opening road trip Sunday with a 2 p.m. match-up against McNeese State.
