HOUSTON, Texas - Kylie Louw scored a late goal to break a scoreless tie and lead Stephen F. Austin to a 1-0 win at Houston Friday night. The win is SFA's second in three games and first-ever road victory against the Cougars.
Friday's game was originally scheduled to be played in Nacogdoches but was moved to Houston due to poor field conditions at the SFA Soccer Complex. The victory moves the Ladyjacks to 3-4-0 on the year and 2-4-0 all-time against the Cougars (2-5-0).
"This is a great win, considering how well they have done vs. other SLC teams this year," SFA head coach George Van Linder said. "It is also good to see how our players responded to the adversity of the weather and game site change."
Louw's goal came off a pass deflected by a Houston defender in the goal box in the 75th minute, and followed a pair of SFA shots on goal in the 74th minute. Junior Kim Kimmel was credited with an assist on the goal, Louw's second of the season.
At the other end of the field, junior goalkeeper Courtney Bauder (3-4-0) posted a season-high five saves to collect SFA's second shutout win of the season.
Each team finished with eight shots for the game, and each squad recorded five shots on goal.
Neither team recorded a shot until Houston took aim in the ninth minute. Kimmel put the game's first shot on goal in the 14th minute. She took aim again five minutes later on a shot that sailed wide, and SFA didn't post another shot for the rest of the first half.
The Cougars went to the locker room with a 3-2 edge in shots, but each squad recorded just one shot on goal in the first period. Houston earned four first-half corner kicks, none of which yielded good scoring opportunities.
After a slow-starting first half, the Ladyjacks fired off three shots in the first nine minutes of the second period. Junior Brenna Crockett recorded a shot on goal in the 45th minute. Houston answered with a shot on goal three minutes later, but the Cougars didn't take another shot until the 79th minute.
By that time, though, SFA already held a 1-0 lead, and Bauder made sure it stood up with three of her five saves coming in the final 10 minutes.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action Sunday, when they host Washington State. The game against the Cougars is set to start at 11 a.m.
