SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The SFA soccer team jumped out to a 2-0 lead and that was all that it would need as the Ladyjacks kept Missouri State at bay for its first shutout of 2009 on Friday at Plaster Field.
It was the second consecutive game that the Ladyjacks (2-3-0) had jumped out to an early multi-goal lead, but unlike last week's overtime loss to Rice the Ladyjacks were able to push through the final 45 minutes and hang on for their second win of the season.
Missouri State (2-3-1) held the edge in shots 6-3 in the first half, but could not find the back of the net. In the meantime SFA made their attempts count, punching in each of their scores within an eight-minute span of the half. The Ladyjack defense then only allowed four Bear shots in the entire second half.
Junior Kim Kimmel put SFA out in front just over 30 minutes into the game with her team-leading third goal of the season, her second in three games, on a feed from freshman Kylie Louw and it turned out that was all that SFA would need.
However, freshman Chelsea Smith gave the Ladyjacks a cushion to work with when she scored her first career goal just over seven minutes later by picking off a goal kick from Bears' goalie Jessica Teahan and finding the lower right-hand corner of the goal.
The SFA defense did the job the rest of the way with the Ladyjacks also giving both goalies Courtney Bauder and Rachel Stelly a full half of work apiece in net.
SFA stays on the road but heads a little closer to home on Sunday when it takes on Arkansas at 1:00 p.m. in Fayetteville.
