Ladyjacks Fall to Colorado College

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Colorado College used a penalty kick goal by Kelly LaVoie in the 73rd minute to notch a 3-2 win over the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team Friday night. The late score thwarted a Ladyjack comeback bid and put an end to a game that was played in cold, rainy conditions, with sleet mixed in toward the end.
Ladyjack head coach Jaime Frias was pleased with his team's performance, in spite of the loss and the poor weather conditions.
"We played what I thought was our best half of soccer so far this season in the first half," Frias said.
The Ladyjacks took the early lead on a goal by freshman Erika Palmacci. Following an SFA corner kick, Palmacci took a headed pass from teammate Brittany Haugen and scored her first career goal with a soft shot to put her team ahead in the 28th minute. The Ladyjacks took that 1-0 lead to halftime, thanks to some solid efforts by goalkeeper Jessica Cotton and the SFA defense.
Cotton, a converted defender playing in place of injured 'keepers Francesca Tierno and Crystin Pactor, stopped the only two shots on goal the Tigers could muster in the first half. SFA held Colorado College to just five shots total in the half. But the Tigers more than doubled that number after halftime, taking 14 shots, nine of which were on target.
Colorado College scored its first goal barely five minutes into the second half. Emily Beans did the honors with an assist by LaVoie. Four minutes later, the Tigers recorded a second goal, this time Amara Wilson scoring with an assist by Jessica Beinlich.
SFA would answer in the 57th minute, when sophomore forward Amanda Alders tied the score with her fourth goal of the season. Alders scored unassisted.
"I thought our girls showed a lot of character to come back and tie it up, like that," Frias said.
But the Tigers set the final score later in the match on the penalty kick winner by LaVoie.
With the loss, SFA moved to 4-4-0 on the season. The Ladyjacks will continue their stay in Colorado Springs until Sunday, when they are scheduled to meet the Air Force Academy. The game is scheduled to start at noon, Central Standard Time.
