LeBlanc, James limit Cardinals offensively in game one, Lamar evens series with late offense in game two
In the opener, SFA jumped out early in support of Gabe LeBlanc (W, 1-0) who went 6.0 innings scattering four hits, two walks and four runs to win for the first time in four appearances.
Cermodrick Bland scored the first run for SFA in the home half of the first as he raced home after an errant throw trying to cut the leadoff man down on a swipe of third. With two outs in the frame, Mark Henning singled into left centerfield for a 2-0 SFA lead through a frame.
LeBlanc worked around a one-out double in the second but ran into Lamar run support in the third as the Cardinals used three hits, two HBP and two walks, one intentional, to push across four runs before stranding the bases loaded.
LeBlanc was perfect over the next three innings as was the defense behind him as the Jacks sat nine batters down via four groundouts, four popouts and a line out. SFA retook the lead in the fifth with a three-run inning. Ethan Peña singled home a pair with contact up the middle with two outs and then a passed ball chase Henning home for a 5-4 advantage. SFA added an insurance run in the post-stretch seventh as Cantua scored Henning on a base knock into center field.
Jack James entered in the seventh and handled the Lamar order as he faced just one over the minimum, retiring the last six batters in order, to pick up his first save of the season.
The Jacks capped the last two innings with a 4-3 double play to end the eighth, before Schneider covered a ton of ground from his spot in right field to shallow center field to record the second out of the ninth inning and set the stage for Peña who fielded contact with a diving effort up the middle and a quick effort throw to Henning who picked for the putout and the finishing touches on a series-opening win.
In game two, Cody Templeton struck out seven over six innings of work keeping the Cardinals off the board until a throwing error to nail the lead runner at third in the seventh went wide of the bag to allow Lamar's tying run to score.
The Cardinals added three more runs in the frame on only one hit. Nate Vidlak took over for Templeton after the E1T and sandwiched an intentional walk with a pair of swinging strikeouts. The Cardinals worked a six-pitch walk to plate the go-ahead run and then Braden Benton singled into left centerfield to score two more for a 4-1 lead.
Templeton's fifth and sixth innings of work both ended with inning-killing double plays. The fifth closed after Peña stepped on the bag at third and fired to Henning to keep the lead intact. The next frame saw Schneider track down contact in the gap before firing to first on the run to double-up the Cardinals.
SFA responded with two runs in the post-stretch seventh, but not without drama. Schneider singled with two outs on the infield, but late throw to get him was errant allowing two runs to score, the second of which was awarded home after an interference call was made following the Lamar third baseman colliding with Coby DeJesus. Following a lengthy two-part review regarding a challenge on a runner path/baseline throw play at first, conducted with a Cardinal pitching change in-between, that totaled 18 minutes, the game was placed under protest by Lamar.
The Cardinals responded in the eighth with seven runs on five hits, three HBP and a walk to take control of the game and even the series.
