SFA plays (6) Northwestern State with berth in bracket title game at stake
BEAUMONT, Texas – Behind a strong starting effort from Cody Templeton, a three-inning relief effort by Reid Bowyer and timely hitting including a solo blast by Josh Ibe to open scoring in the second inning, (7) Stephen F. Austin advanced in the Beaumont Bracket with a 2-0 shutout win over host (2) Lamar on Thursday night from Vincent-Beck Stadium. The Jacks move into Friday night's winner's bracket to face (6) Northwestern State, while the Cardinals look to avoid elimination against (3) UTRGV tomorrow afternoon.
Templeton earned his sixth victory of the season as he went six innings allowing five hits and working around three walks to keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard. Templeton fanned five batters and stranded Lamar base runners in the first, second, fifth and sixth innings with multiple Cardinals left on in the second and sixth.
His effort was supported offensively by Ibe who belted his team-leading seventh home run of the season in his first plate appearance to put the Jacks on the board. An insurance run was supplied in the fifth as Cermodrick Bland singled through the left side to plate Ethan Peña. That backed Templeton and was more than enough for Bowyer who, after issuing a two-out walk in the post-stretch seventh, sat down the next seven Cardinal batters to earn the save.
