
‘Jacks Extend Win Streak to Six After Sweeping Doubleheader Against ETAMU

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin softball team (22-19, 11-6 SLC) hosted the East Texas A&M Lions (9-31, 5-12 SLC) in a midweek conference series.
Game 1:
The 'Jacks offense got on the board in the first after back-to-back singles from Ellie Vance and Kyi'Marri Ester put two runners on base. Vance and Ester pulled off a beautiful double steal to bring in the first run for SFA, 1-0. East Texas A&M responded in the top of the third and tied the game up at one. The Lions took the lead in the top of the fourth as they tacked on two runs after hitting four singles in a row, 3-1.
SFA responded in the next half inning after a walk drawn by Lilly Bean and a single by Chloe Reneau which brought up Jamie Varga. Varga smoked her sixth triple of the year to left center which brought in both runners to tie the game at three. Kaylee Paul followed with an RBI single up the middle to give SFA a 4-3 lead. The 'Jacks offense continued to fire on all cylinders in the fifth after four singles in a row brought in the fifth run, 5-3. With the bases loaded and Reneau up to bat, the Lions pitcher threw a ball over the head of the catcher that allowed Vance to score from third, 6-3. Alexis Telford sat down the Lions in the top of the seventh to end the first game of the doubleheader.

Game 2:
ETAMU got the second game started with a bang as Wright hit a leadoff home run on the first pitch of the game. However, the SFA offense would not let the Lions have the lead for long as Mikaelah Burkland hit a leadoff single, then Hope Lusk reached on an error, followed by a walk by Vance to load up the bases. Ester reached on a fielder's choice after the Lions decided to throw out Burkland at home, but the throw to first to try to double up Ester got away from the Lions defense which scored Lusk, 1-1. Adelyn Becerra stepped up to bat and blasted a three-run home run to center, 4-1.
The 'Jacks offense did not take their foot off the gas in the second as Paul singled then Burkland followed with an RBI double, 5-1. After two scoreless innings, SFA blew the game wide open in the bottom of the fifth. Becerra hit a leadoff single and scored off an RBI double from Kelby Robbins, 6-1. Reneau reached on an errant throw by the pitcher which allowed Robbins to score from second, 7-1. Jamie "Triple Threat" Varga lived up to her nickname as she hit her seventh triple of the season and second of the day to left center and bring in Reneau, 8-1. Paul stepped up to bat with a chance to secure another walk-off run-rule victory for SFA and that is just what she did as she hit an RBI single up the middle, 9-1.
