‘Jacks Sweep Demons in Sunday Slugfest

NATCHITOCHES, La.- The Stephen F. Austin softball team (20-19, 9-6 SLC) finished their series against the Northwestern State Demons (4-34, 1-14 SLC) in a Sunday matchup.

The first inning started off with a bang after Hope Lusk drew a walk that was followed by back-to-back singles from Ellie Vance and Adelyn Becerra brought up Lilly Bean who smashed a grand slam over the left center wall, 4-0. NSU responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, 4-2. However, the 'Jacks struck again in the second after back-to-back singles from Kaylee Paul and Mikaelah Burkland brought up Lusk who sent a ball way over the left field wall which extended the SFA lead to 7-2. The Demons added a run in the fourth, 7-3. After back-to-back singles from Gabby Coffey and Jamie Varga to begin the fifth, Chloe Reneau bunted the runners over for Paul who grounded out to first, but it gave Sammy Hagman enough time to score, 8-3. Burkland smoked an RBI single up the middle, 9-3. In the top of the seventh, Lusk hit an RBI double to right field to bring in Paul for the tenth run of the game for the 'Jacks, 10-3. Brooke Gainous came into the game in relief after NSU put up two runs in the bottom of the seventh and only allowed one run as SFA staved off a NSU comeback and secured a 10-6 win.

SFA will return home for a midweek series against East Texas A&M on Tuesday, April 8th beginning with a doubleheader at 4:00 and 6:30 p.m.
