NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks Softball team (26-24, 14-10 SLC) wrap up their regular season schedule at home for the 2025 season against Southland foe McNeese State University (34-18, 20-4 SLC). Senior Day will be celebrated on Saturday following the conclusion of the second game of the Saturday doubleheader.
Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The Lumberjacks closed out their non-conference play for the season on Tuesday as they hosted Conference USA opponent Louisiana Tech, and will look to end their regular season schedule with a successful home series against the Cowgirls before turning their attention to the Southland Conference Tournament. The Lumberjacks currently sit in sixth place in the Southland standings and can finish no worse than sixth regardless of the results of the weekend, however, depending on results from their series against the Cowgirls paired with the results from Lamar and Incarnate Word's weekend series could see the Lumberjacks jump to as high as fourth place in the Southland standings when it is all said and done. The Lumberjacks will need their fourth ranked offense and pitching rotation in the Southland to be firing on all cylinders as they draw a match against McNeese who boasts a top-three offense and pitching staff in the Southland and are tied for first place in the standings with Southeastern Louisiana.
Cowgirls at a Glance:
The McNeese State Cowgirls will travel to the Piney Woods looking to get back in the win column and keep their bid for the first overall seed alive against the Lumberjacks. The Cowgirls put up a valiant effort on Tuesday as they travel to Baton Rouge and battled the LSU Tigers but were unable to come out with a win in an eventual 5-2 loss. Prior to their loss on Tuesday, the Cowgirls had rattled off 11 straight wins and continue to push the Southeastern Louisiana University Lady Lions for the coveted number one spot in the Southland standings. The Cowgirls will conclude their season at home next Tuesday when they host the Louisiana Tech University Bulldogs in a Tuesday evening midweek.
Scouting Report-Lumberjacks:
The hitting trio of Kaylee Paul, Ellie Vance, and Mikaelah Burkland will look to keep the SFA offense rolling within the fences of SFA Softball Field as all three girls have at least 50 hits this season. Paul has recorded consecutive games with multiple hits and leads the team with her healthy .443 batting average, while Vance continues to pour on the hits in bunches as she leads the team with 65 hits and has recorded 20 games this season with multiple hits, with Burkland continuing to anchor down the leadoff spot for SFA as she has recorded a hit in eight of her last 10 contests with five multi-hit efforts during that stretch. In the circle, Alexis Telford continues to dazzle for the 'Jacks as she claimed her second SLC Pitcher of the Week award on Monday and has pitched to the tune of a 2.31 era this season.
Scouting Report-Cowgirls:
Kassidy Chance, Nyjah Fontenot, and Samantha Mundine have formed a fearsome hitting trio for McNeese this season as all three players have a batting average over .380 for the season and have combined for 80 RBIs. Jada Munoz rounds out the Cowgirls offense as she has launched 13 home runs this season, second most in the Southland, and leads the team with 46 RBIs. Maddie Taylor has been a familiar face in the circle for the Cowgirls as she has pitched in 111.2 innings this season and leads the McNeese pitching staff with 52 strikeouts.
Series:
Saturday's series opener will mark the 103rd time these two Southland rivals have met with McNeese leading the series 52-50 to date. The Cowgirls won the most recent meeting back in 2023 when they squeaked out a 5-4 home win over SFA. The Lumberjacks hold a 10-8 home record all-time against the Cowgirls.
On Deck:
The Lumberjacks await their opponent for the Southland Conference Tournament and Bracket Play.
