THIBODEAUX, Louisiana - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (11-27, 3-17) beat the Nicholls Colonels (11-25, 7-16 SLC) this evening, 7-5.
The Lumberjacks started this game rolling, as Cermodrick Bland worked a one-out walk and Josh Ibe followed him with a double into right field, scoring Bland. One batter later, Julian Swift singled home Ibe, putting the 'Jacks up 2-0. Nicholls got one back in the bottom of the first, cutting the Lumberjacks lead to 2-1.
Neither team scored the next two innings, as 'Jacks starter Dylan Mulcahy kept the Nicholls bats at bay. In the bottom of the fourth, however, the Colonels scored another to tie the game at two heading into the fifth inning.
After a scoreless fifth inning, the Lumberjacks went back to work in the sixth. After a Cermodrick Bland single and a Josh Ibe walk put runners at first and second, Mark Henning would hit an RBI single, scoring Bland and putting the Lumberjacks up by one. After Julian Swift advanced Ibe and Henning to second and third with a flyout, Kevin Duran came through with an RBI groundout, scoring Ibe to make the score 4-2 in favor of SFA.
In the seventh, a walk by Owen Hooper and two errors loaded the bases with no outs. After a strikeout, Josh Ibe would continue his dominant season, driving in Hooper with an RBI single. Mark Henning followed Ibe's single with one of his own, scoring Austin Cadroy. Cooper Schneider would then score on a wild pitch, extending the SFA lead to 7-2 after seven innings.
The next two innings went by without any offense, as the Lumberjacks went into the ninth with a five-run lead. Nicholls got a rally going, scoring three runs, but Elian Balmaceda came in and picked up the save by striking out the Nicholls batter. The Lumberjacks would win the middle game of their three-game set against Nicholls, 7-5.
Reid Boyett (1-0) won his first game of the year, while Alec Sparks (4-3) was tagged with the loss. Elian Balmaceda picked up his third save this year for the Lumberjacks.
