‘Jacks Drop Doubleheader to Lions

HAMMOND, La.- The Stephen F. Austin softball team (23-21, 12-8 SLC) faced off against top seeded Southeastern Louisiana Lions (36-11, 16-4 SLC).
Game 1:
Mikaelah Burkland hit a leadoff single to left field which brought up the dangerous Hope Lusk. Lusk smashed a ball to straight away center for a two-run home run to give the 'Jacks an early 2-0 lead. Southeastern responded in the bottom of the first with two runs of their own, 2-2. The Lions tacked on two more in the second, 4-2. Both pitchers showed out with three scoreless innings until the top of the sixth when Lusk hit her second home run of the game over the left field wall to cut the deficit to one, 4-3. SLU responded by doubling their score in the bottom of the sixth, 8-3. The 'Jacks were unable to mount a comeback in the seventh.

Game 2:
Burkland hit a leadoff triple to center to get the game started for the 'Jacks. Lusk followed with a walk and then Vance hit an RBI single through the right side, 1-0. In the second, Jamie Varga hit a leadoff double to left center, followed by a Kaylee Paul single to left. Then Varga and Paul pulled off a fantastic double steal which put SFA up 2-0. Burkland hit a single, then Lusk drew her second walk to load up the bases. Lilly Bean took advantage of the bases loaded and hit an RBI single to center, 3-0. SLU scored their first run of the second inning to cut the lead to two, 3-1. The Lions tied the game up at three in the bottom of the fourth, before their offense exploded for eight runs in the fifth as they secured a walk-off run rule victory, 11-3.
