HAMMOND, La.- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks Softball team (22-19, 11-6 SLC) hit the road for a weekend series as they get set to battle the Southeastern Louisiana University Lady Lions (33-11, 13-4 SLC).
Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The Lumberjacks flipped over to a new month from March to April and have used the increasing warmer weather as a way to light their bats on fire and heat up their offense with the rising temperatures. The Lumberjacks have yet to lose a game in the month of April, posting a perfect 7-0 record, and their scorching hot bats have played a large part in the success. The 'Jacks have scored 40 runs over their first seven games of April (5.7 runs/game), and have tallied three run-rule wins including back-to-back run-rule wins over the East Texas A&M Lions to close out their midweek series at home. The hits continue to pour in for the Lumberjack batters as their 10-hit effort in their series finale 8-0 win over the Lions marked the fifth straight game with double-digit hits for the SFA offense with the team totaling 58 hits over their last five games. The offensive resurgence has seen SFA transform into a top-three offense in the Southland, pairing that lethal offense with an already top-three pitching staff in the Southland that boasts a 3.53 team era this season. SFA will now look to keep their offense and pitching soaring high in Hammond this weekend as they take on the leaders of the Southland Conference in the Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions this weekend in a pivotal conference series.
Lady Lions at a Glance:
The Southeastern Louisiana University Lady Lions continue to rack up the wins on their 2025 campaign as they took two of three from the Lamar University Cardinals in their mid-week series. The Lady Lions now return home looking to improve on a 15-2 home record this season which stands as the second-best home record in the Southland this season. Southeastern's 34 overall wins this season are the most of any school in the Southland as they continue to hold firm on the number one spot in the conference, and will look to extend their two-game winning streak this weekend against the Lumberjacks.
Scouting Report-Lumberjacks:
Kaylee Paul and Jamie Varga continue to hit the cover off the ball as Paul continues to pace the 'Jacks with her .455 batting average, currently owning a six-game hitting streak, and has tallied four multi-hit efforts in her last five games including a trio of three-hit performances. Varga, on the other hand, has been just as effective as Paul at the dish as she is in the midst of a nine-game hitting streak and has recorded an RBI in three straight games for SFA. Adelyn Becerra continues to flex her power as she will carry a five-game hitting streak into Hammond and has hit a home run in back-to-back contests, while continuing to lead the team in long balls with eight on the season. Alexis Telford, Reagan Hall, and Brooke Gainous formed a terrific trio in the circle against the Lions as they combined to stymie the Lions bats allowing just three earned runs over 17 innings and punching out 16 combined batters. Hall struck out eight Lions in her outing against East Texas A&M, marking a new career-high in strikeouts for the freshman.
Scouting Report-Lady Lions:
Maria Detillier continues to be an RBI machine for the Lady Lions as she not only leads the team in RBIs with 45, but her RBI total stands as the most by any player in the conference this season. Cydnee Schneider has been a do-it-all hitter for the Lady Lions as she has tallied 11 doubles, triples, and three home runs this year, while Chloe Magee and Shelby Morris lead an aggressive Southeastern Louisiana team on the basepaths as both players have over 20 stolen bases on the year. Macie LaRue leads the pitching staff with her 92 strikeouts, while Hallie Burns has pitched to a 1.87 era on the season.
Series:
Friday afternoon's series opener will mark the 35th all-time meeting between these two Southland foes. SFA leads the all-time series 18-16 to date, however, it was the Lady Lions who came out on top in their last meeting in 2019 with a 2-0 extra-innings win over SFA. The Lumberjacks hold a 9-11 all-time road record against the Lady Lions in Hammond.
On Deck:
The Lumberjacks return home for a midweek home matchup against Prairie View A&M University for a single game on Tuesday, April 15th. First pitch for Tuesday's game is set for 5:30 p.m. CST at the SFA Softball Field.
