EDINBURG, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks Baseball Team (9-24, 2-14 SLC) fell 7-2 on Friday evening in the series opener to the hosting University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros (23-10, 14-5 SLC).
The Vaqueros got on the board early at home as they would plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 2-0 lead. UTRGV would expand their lead as they would score a run in both the second and third innings to take a 4-0 lead over SFA after three full innings of play.
The fourth inning saw UTRGV score three more runs to take a 7-0 lead over the Lumberjacks. However, SFA would not go down without a fight as in the top of the fifth Kevin Duran and Dante Turgeon would hit back-to-back singles to put a pair of runners on for SFA. Owen Hooper would step into the box and answer the call for SFA as he would line a ball back up the middle to score Duran from second and get SFA on the board, 7-1.
SFA would not be done scoring in the top of the fifth as Dalton Mullins would come into the game off the bench as a pinch hitter and made his presence felt immediately as he would lace a double to left to score Turgeon and cut the Vaqueros lead to 7-2.
Both teams' bullpens would settle into a groove following the fifth as Reid Boyett pitched a four-inning gem for SFA out of the 'pen, allowing just three hits and no runs to keep the UTRGV bats silent the remainder of the game. Unfortunately for SFA, they were unable to find the equalizing runs over the final four innings and would eventually fall 7-2 to the Vaqueros.
Angelo Cabral (4-0) took the win for UTRGV while Cody Templeton (3-3) took the loss for SFA. Jack Lopez (SV) recorded his first save of the season for UTRGV on the mound.
