EDINBURG, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (9-23, 2-13 SLC) hit the road once again to take on the UTRGV Vaqueros (22-10, 13-5 SLC) for a three-game conference series in Edinburg.
A Look at the Lumberjacks
SFA comes into this series against UTRGV having lost ten straight games. Last weekend, they were swept in their three-game series against conference foe Texas A&M Corpus Christi. After UTRGV, the 'Jacks will come home to play a midweek game against Prairie View A&M before heading to Louisiana to take on Nicholls.
For the Lumberjacks, it's still Josh Ibe who leads the offense. The big first baseman/designated hitter has been exceptional this season, and he continued his strong play last weekend. Josh hit his eleventh home run of the year in Sunday's game, a line shot over the left field wall. Ibe has consistently been the best hitter in the 'Jacks lineup, leading the Lumberjacks in multiple offensive categories. He's first in batting average (.362), OPS (1.274), slugging percentage (.809), on-base percentage (.465), home runs (11), RBI (30), runs (26), hits (34), and total bases (76). Josh is leading the SLC in slugging percentage and is tied for the lead in home runs. He's also sixth in total bases. Junior second baseman Kevin Duran also had an outstanding series against TAMUCC, hitting .545 with a .909 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base percentage. He drove in three runs, doubled, and hit his second home run of the year in Sunday's game. This year, Kevin is hitting .273 with a .841 OPS. He's tied for second in doubles with six and is tied for fourth in home runs with two. His 33 total bases are also fifth on the team. Senior first baseman Mark Henning continues to provide a consistent bat in the SFA lineup. In the series against TAMUCC, Mark went six for 16 with a double. He also drove in three runs and walked once. On the year, Mark is second on the Lumberjacks with a .920 OPS and a .425 on-base percentage. He's also second in total bases (52), third in home runs (3), second in doubles (6), and second in RBI (18). Finally, Junior third baseman Julian Swift continues to be a staple in the middle of the Lumberjacks offense. Swift hit his first home run of the year in game two against TAMUCC. On the season, Julian is third on the Lumberjacks with a .283 batting average and third on the team with 17 RBI. Junior outfielder Ben Hoshizaki has provided speed at the top of the SFA lineup, having stolen 13 bases, first on the team and fourth in the Southland.
On the pitching side for SFA, Cody Templeton continues to be a workhorse for Matt Vanderburg's staff. Although he had a rough game against Texas A&M Corpus Christi this past Friday, Cody has still been reliable for the Lumberjacks. On the year, Templeton is 12th in the conference with a 3.76 ERA. He's also first in the SLC with a 5.83 strikeout-to-walk ratio while leading the conference in walks allowed per nine innings (1.03). Templeton is slated to pitch Friday against UTRGV. Hayden Tronson is slated to pitch game two for the Lumberjacks. Tronson pitched well this past weekend against TAMUCC, allowing no runs and only one hit in 1.1 innings out of the bullpen. On the year, Tronson has a 7.92 ERA over 25 innings. Reliever Jonathan Valdez had a great weekend out of the bullpen for the 'Jacks, as he threw five innings without allowing a run while striking out five. On the year, Valdez has a 4.15 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP over 17.1 innings pitched.
A Look at the Vaqueros
UTRGV comes into this series against the Lumberjacks at 22-10 overall and 13-5 in SLC play. They are 5-3 over their last eight games. After SFA, the Vaqueros will have a showdown against the number two-ranked team in the nation when they travel to Austin to take on the Texas Longhorns in a midweek game. After that, they'll head to Hammond, Louisiana to face off against Southeastern Louisiana in a three-game conference series.
UTRGV is led by a high-powered offense, as they have seven players hitting above .300. Redshirt Sophomore Armani Raygoza has been a force for the Vaqueros, leading the team in batting average (.370), OPS (1.138), home runs (9), RBI (38), and total bases (82). Infielder Isaac Lopez is not too far behind Valdez, though, as his .364 batting average, 1.004 OPS, and 69 total bases rank second to Valdez for the team lead. Graduate Student Jacob Sanchez is second on the team with six home runs and tied for first with 44 hits. As a team, the Vaqueros are hitting .309 with a .862 OPS.
