HOUSTON, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (9-16, 2-7 SLC) will stay in Houston this weekend for a three-game SLC weekend series against the Houston Christian Huskies (14-8, 7-2 SLC).
A Look at the Lumberjacks
The SFA Lumberjacks come into this series at 9-16 overall and 2-7 in the Southland Conference. They are coming off a midweek loss to the Houston Cougars. Last weekend, they lost two of three to Tarleton State in a three-game non-conference series.
Josh Ibe is still the guy on offense for the Lumberjacks. Ibe has been hampered by injuries a little over the last couple of games, but he's still been very productive. On the year, Ibe leads the team in batting average (.391), OPS (1.444), slugging percentage (.938), on-base percentage (.506), home runs (9), RBI (25), runs (24), hits (25), and total bases (60). Josh is leading the SLC in slugging percentage. He's also second in home runs, fourth in batting average, fifth in on-base percentage, and fifth in total bases. Last week, Josh earned SLC Hitter of the Week after dominating ACU and Tarleton pitching. Mark Henning continues to be a consistent force in the middle of the 'Jacks lineup, as his .284 batting average and .870 OPS ranks second and third on the team. He's also second on the Lumberjacks in total bases with 33. Julian Swift is also in the midst of a solid season, ranking third on the Lumberjacks in batting average (.278) and second in RBI (15). He's also been very hard to strikeout, leading the SLC in that category as he's averaging just one strikeout per 17 at-bats. As a team, SFA is hitting .257 with a .751 OPS. They've hit 17 home runs as a team and have 41 doubles.
On the pitching side, ace Cody Templeton will get the ball in game one. On the year, Templeton is eighth in the conference with a 2.41 ERA and third in WHIP (0.96). He's also third in the SLC with a 5.00 strikeout-to-walk ratio while leading the conference in walks allowed per nine innings (1.32). He leads the 'Jacks in all of those categories. Dylan Mulcahy will toe the rubber in game two. After a dominant start, Dylan has cooled off a little bit. He carries a 6.30 ERA and 1.35 WHIP over 20 innings pitched. Dylan is leading the staff in strikeouts with 24 and opponent batting average, as hitters are hitting just .208 against the right-hander. Jack James has been consistent out of the bullpen this year for the Lumberjacks, as his 3.46 ERA is second on the team to Templeton.
A Look at the Huskies
The Houston Christian Huskies come into this series at 14-8 overall and 7-2 in the SLC. Last weekend, they took two of three against UTRGV, who was first in the SLC at that time. They lost to Texas A&M in their midweek game this week, 7-2. After the 'Jacks, the Huskies will travel to Waco to take on the Baylor Bears.
The offense is led by five guys with batting averages over .300. Rhett Hendricks leads the team in average (.350) and is second in OPS (.926). Parker Edwards leads the team in OPS (.984), RBI (21), total bases (44), and home runs (6) while ranking fourth on the team with a .314 batting average. Jack Walker is leading the Huskies in on-base percentage (.429) and is second to Hendricks in batting average (.329). As a team, the Huskies are hitting .274 with a .753 OPS.
On the pitching side for HCU, Parker Edwards and Joshua Caravalho lead the staff. Edwards carries a 3.64 ERA and 1.08 WHIP across 29.2 innings, while Caravalho has a 3.94 ERA and 1.34 WHIP over 32 innings pitched. As a staff, the Huskies have a 4.90 ERA and 1.42 WHIP.
Series
Friday's game between the Lumberjacks and Huskies will be the 38th time these two teams have matched up. SFA is leading the series 22-15, but HCU has taken the last three games. The Huskies won the last meeting 8-3 last year in Houston.
