NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin's Softball Team (8-23, 1-2) get set for their first home conference series when they play host to the visiting Utah Tech Trailblazers (9-16, 2-1) for a three-game weekend series.
Wednesday at a Glance for SFA:
The Lumberjacks hosted University of Houston on Wednesday with the Cougars grabbing a 17-5 win over the Lumberjacks at SFA Softball Field to open up a four-game homestand. Despite the loss, the Lumberjack offense fought admirably against a powerful opponent in Houston as they put up eight hits and five runs against the Cougars.
Extra-Base Machines:
The Lumberjack lineup has had no problem racking up the extra-base hits this season as 12 different players have recorded at least one extra-base hit this season. Emily Land has raked the entire season as she leads the team with five doubles, while Lexi Benson has been just as dominant with extra-base hits as she leads the team with five triples, tied for second-most in the nation, and has added three doubles on top of that for a team-leading eight extra-base hits this season. Amiah Galcatcher has been on a hitting tear as she has recorded a double in three of her last four games and is second on the team in doubles with four. Brittany Coe and Kelby Robbins have formed a dynamic duo as they both have recorded three doubles this season, while Mikaelah Burkland, Alexis Telford, and Hope Lusk all have a double this season. Mallory Webb has both a double and triple this season, while Ellie Vance, Chloe Reneau, and Kaylee Paul all have triples on the season. Four different Lumberjacks have homeruns this season as Mikaelah Burkland leads the team with two long balls this season, while Amiah Galcatcher, Ellie Vance, and Alexis Telford all have a homerun as well.
There's No Place Like Home:
Despite the home loss on Wednesday, the Lumberjacks recent trend of performing well at SFA Softball field offensively continued. In seven of ten home games this season, the 'Jacks have recorded at least five hits while drawing a walk in all 10 home games this season and recording six home games with at least three walks. At home, the 'Jacks have scored 38 runs while holding their opponents to two or less runs in six of their 10 home games, and recording a pair of games with double-digit runs, as they continue to play competitive softball against any visiting opponent at SFA Softball Field.
Don't Blink or You Might Miss Them:
Mallory Webb leads the SFA base stealing effort as she has been a headache for opposing defenses as she stolen a team-high five stolen bases, while Madison Nguyen and Ellie Vance continue to form a dynamic duo as both have four stolen bases on the year. Meanwhile, Kaylee Paul is a tough out on the basepaths as she is a perfect 3-3 on stolen bases, while Chloe Reneau is just as dangerous when on base as she has stolen two bases as well this season. However, the Lumberjack lineup has plenty more speed to spare as Lexi Benson, Brittany Coe, and Ja'Aira Fletcher should not be overlooked on the bases as all three have also stolen a base of their own this season. On the season, the 'Jacks have swiped 21 bases as a team, which ranks them fifth in the WAC in that category.
Patience & Punchouts:
The Lumberjack offense has shown incredible discipline and patience at the plate so far this season as they have totaled 84 walks a team, which is good for second most in the WAC this season. Lexi Benson leads the effort with her team-leading 12 walks, however, Benson is far from the only one as 16 other players this season have drawn a free pass. The Lumberjacks currently average a healthy 2.70 walks/game, which ranks them third in the WAC so far this season. Meanwhile, the SFA pitching staff has showcased their wipeout pitches this season as they have tallied 126 strikeouts as a staff, which is the second most by any school in the WAC this season behind only GCU.
Comfortable in Conference:
Last season, Lexi Benson and Kelby Robbins were comfortable at the plate against WAC opponents as they both hit over .300 in conference play and have started off conference play this season right where they left off last season. Benson recorded three hits over the 'Jacks first conference series against Southern Utah, one of which was her fifth triple on the year, currently ranking her tied for second in the nation in triples this season. Meanwhile, Robbins recorded her third double of the season as well as drew a pair of walks. Mallory Webb was a third Lumberjack who performed well in conference play last season and has carried it over to this season. Webb recorded 14 hits in conference play last season, and started conference play off on a strong foot by recording both a hit and a walk in the final two games against Southern Utah last weekend.
Keeping Up with the 'Jacks: Season Stats Edition:
Kelby Robbins leads all qualified SFA hitters with her .308 batting average this season, while she has reached base safely in five of her last six contests. Amiah Galcatcher is second on the team with a .278 batting average as she has recorded a double in three of her last four games. Ellie Vance and Mallory Webb have found their grooves at the plate lately as they are both on a three-game hitting streak. Emily Land continues to be a valuable bat in the SFA lineup as she is currently slashing .362/.848/.468 on the season, while recording a double in three of her last four games. Madison Nguyen has been the model of consistency this season for SFA as she is the only player to draw a start in all 31 games for SFA, while leading the team in hits with 27. Madison Nguyen, Lexi Benson, and Emily Land have all been clutch hitters for SFA this season as they all are tied for the team-lead in RBIs with 10 apiece. Brooke Gainous leads the team with a 3.42 era as she has issued just seven walks this year, while both Aydenne Brown and Alexis Telford have pitched over 60 innings this year. Brown has struck out a team-high 50 hitters this season in 65 innings, while Telford has thrown five complete games and has split playing time at first base for SFA in addition to her pitching.

The Utah Tech Trailblazers enter this weekend with a 9-16 record while carrying a 2-1 conference record. Laura Lockard leads the Trailblazers with her 26 hits this season, while leading the team in batting average with a .366 mark, and 20 RBIs on the campaign. Carly Eldredge has been just as effective with runners on base as she has recorded three homeruns and 19 RBIs this season. Sauren Garton rounds out the rotation for Utah Tech as she has allowed just 12 walks this season while compiling a 3-4 record.
Unfamiliar Foe:
This weekend doubleheader will feature just the second time these two schools have squared off with each other as these two schools met once last season with SFA claiming a 2-0 win over the Trailblazers in the WAC Softball Tournament held at the GCU Softball Stadium in a game that saw Brooke Gainous throw a complete-game shutout for SFA to secure the win.
