NACOGDOCHES, Texas. - The Stephen F. Austin Softball team (8-25, 1-4) fell in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader to the Utah Tech Trailblazers (11-16, 4-1) as the Trailblazers grinded out two 1-0 wins over SFA to open the three-game weekend series.
Game 1: Utah Tech 1, SFA 0
The opening game of the doubleheader offered a low scoring affair as Aydenne Brown drew the start in the circle for SFA while Attlyn Johnston got the starting nod for Utah Tech. The first six innings of the game offered a back-and-forth pitching duel as both teams were held scoreless through the first six innings. The Trailblazers would break the ice in the top of the seventh inning as they took a slim 1-0 lead and would eventually hang on for a nail-biting 1-0 win over the Lumberjacks.
The Lumberjack offense totaled six hits in the series opener as SFA recorded their eighth game with at least five hits in their last 11 games but were unable to push across the equalizing run. Kelby Robbins (1-4), Mallory Webb (1-3), Lexi Benson (1-2, HBP), Ellie Vance (1-3), Chloe Reneau (1-3), and Madison Nguyen (1-3) all recorded hits for SFA. Vance and Webb both extended their hitting streak to four games while Lexi Benson stole her second base of the season.
Aydenne Brown threw six flawless innings as she allowed just three total baserunners while striking out eight hitters as she lowered her season era to 3.75 with her solid outing. Brown has now allowed two or less runs in three of her last four starts, while striking out at least eight hitters in those same three starts. Kayla Palomino pitched one inning, striking out one batter, while Emily Land drew the start behind the plate for SFA and racked up the putouts on the afternoon as she led the team with an impressive 10 putouts. Chloe Reneau formed a nice compliment to Land defensively as she finished second on the team with six putouts of her own.
Game 2: Utah Tech 1, SFA 0
Brooke Gainous drew the start in the circle for SFA while Danyelle Leone drew the start for the Trailblazers. The Trailblazers struck first in the doubleheader finale as they would push a run across in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead, however, another stellar outing from Gainous would limit the Trailblazers to just that one run in game two. The Lumberjack defense helped keep Utah Tech off the board in the top of the third inning as with two outs and a runner at second, Madison Nguyen added another gold glove caliber play to her defensive highlight reel by laying out for a diving catch in shallow left field to take away a hit from Carly Eldredge and keep the game 1-0 in favor of Utah Tech.
Brooke Gainous would continue to stymie the Trailblazers hitters as Gainous would work out of a runner on third with only one out jam in the top of the seventh by getting a pop out and groundout on the next two batters to keep SFA within striking distance trailing 1-0 heading to the bottom of the seventh. Unfortunately for SFA, they would be unable to push across the tying run in the bottom of the seventh and fell 1-0 in the second game of the doubleheader.
Chloe Reneau (2-3, SB) recorded her second straight game with a base hit and has now reached base safely in three of her last four games, while showing off her incredible speed as she stole her third base of the season following her second hit of the game. Kelby Robbins (1-3) recorded her third straight game with a hit and has reached base in four of her last five games, while Kaylee Paul drew a walk in her lone at-bat of the game.
Brooke Gainous continues to string together superb pitching performances as she allowed just one run over seven innings striking out three hitters and allowing just four baserunners on the afternoon. Gainous has allowed just two runs over her last 16.1 innings pitched, which has lowered her season era to a sparking 3.10 mark for the campaign. Alex Dubose drawing the start at first base added onto her solid defensive season by leading the team with six putouts, while Chloe Reneau and Emily Land formed a dynamic duo as both recorded four putouts apiece.
The Lumberjacks will be back in action tomorrow, March 24th at SFA Softball Field for the series finale of the three-game series with first pitch scheduled for 10:00 a.m. CST.
