Lumberjacks Face The Chippewas In Midweek Matchup

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks look to carry their momentum from their walk-off victory over the Central Michigan Chippewas this past Sunday into their two-game series this week vs. Central Michigan. Game one is Tuesday, February 20 at 6:30 p.m. followed by a Wednesday afternoon game starting at 3 p.m. at Pilgrim's Park.
The Matchup
Stephen F. Austin and Central Michigan split two games during the SFA Invitational last weekend. Central Michigan won the first matchup on Friday February 16th by a score of 9-4. The two teams faced each other again on Sunday February 18th which saw a Lumberjacks comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning to walk it off and win by a score of 6-5. Central Michigan currently leads the series history with a 3-1 record against Stephen F. Austin.
A Look at Stephen F. Austin
The Lumberjacks are coming off a huge weekend which saw them finish with a 3-1 overall record in the SFA Invitational. The 3-1 start is the best start to a season since 2010 which saw SFA have a 4-0 record through the first four games of the season. The Lumberjacks picked up their first win of the season beating Texas A&M Corpus Christi by a final score of 17-10. SFA then had a rematch on Sunday with the Islanders and picked up their second win of the season over TAMUCC by a final score of 13-5 in the first game. SFA then picked up a win over Central Michigan in walk-off fashion by a final score of 6-5 in their second game of the day on Sunday to finish the SFA Invitational with a 3-1 overall record.
Freshman Colton Griffin had a huge impact for the Lumberjacks through the first four games. The Houston, Texas native finished the tournament with two home runs, seven stolen bases and had a .429 batting average. Griffin currently ranks first in the nation in stolen bases with his seven steals. The Lumberjacks also saw their offense explode scoring 40 runs through four games and hitting nine home runs. The 'Jacks nine home runs on the weekend rank them seventh in the nation for home runs hit.
A Look at Central Michigan
The Chippewas began their 2024 campaign with an extra inning 3-1 loss to the Islanders of Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Central Michigan was able to bounce back and win over Stephen F. Austin on Friday by a score of 9-4 notching the first victory for manager Jake Sabol in his first season at the helm of the Chippewas. Central Michigan struggled to find momentum the rest of the weekend as they fell to Texas A&M Corpus Christi by a score of 13-1 in seven innings on Saturday. The Chippewas then lost a heartbreaker as the Lumberjacks won in walk-off fashion in the final game of the SFA Invitational by a final score of 6-5.
Danny Wustenfeld leads the Chippewas at the dish so far this season. The senior leads the team with his .467 batting average alongside seven hits, three RBI's and a 1.089 OPS.
