Lumberjacks Wrap up Tournament in Walk-Off Fashion

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks won both games of their double header today beating Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the first game and Central Michigan in the second. The Lumberjacks finished the SFA Invitational with a 3-1 overall record.
The Lumberjacks began the day playing the Islanders in a rematch of last night's Lumberjack win. Elian Balmaceda made his debut for the 'Jacks on the mound. The Junior from Houston, Texas held TAMUCC scoreless through five innings before the Islanders found life and recorded five runs in the top of the sixth inning. The Lumberjacks however started the game off hot continuing their momentum from last night's game and posted a five spot in the bottom of the first inning.
Freshman Colton Griffin got the scoring started after crossing home on a wild pitch. Cody Fleischer singled to center field driving in Cole Hill bringing the Lumberjack lead to 2-0. Senior Cal Martin then broke the game open with a monster home run over the left field wall making it 5-0 'Jacks. SFA was able to push across one run in the second, two in the third, four in the sixth and one in the eight to round out the scoring for the Lumberjacks. The Islanders were able to push five runs across in the sixth inning to keep cut into the Lumberjacks lead but SFA responded with four runs of their own to widen the gap. SFA won 13-5 over Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Elian Balmaceda (1-0) took the win on the mound and Cam Soliz (0-1) took the loss. Will Larson also recorded his first save of the season after throwing three shutout innings.
The nigh cap saw a rematch of Stephen F. Austin and Central Michigan. Skyler Jaco started the game off strong striking out two Chippewas hitters and shutting their offense out. Yet again the Lumberjacks started off hot plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning courtesy of a single from Tom Biggs. Central Michigan was able to push one run across in the top of the second but yet again Stephen F. Austin responded in the bottom half of the inning. Julian Thompson hit a home run and Cole Hill later scored on a wild pitch.
Skyler Jaco held the Chips at bay until they were able to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth inning. Both teams were unable to push a run across until Robby Morgan IV blasted his second home run of the day to put the Chippewas in front 5-4. The top of the ninth inning saw Andrew Kithil hold Central Michigan scoreless. Colton Griffin led off the inning and was hit by a pitch. Cole Hill then followed up with a single advancing Griffin to second base. Tom Biggs then laid down a bunt to load the bases and brought Peyton Parker to the plate. Parker put the ball in play which resulted in an error by the shortstop allowing Griffin and Hill to score. The Lumberjacks won in walk off fashion 6-5 over the Chippewas. Andrew Kithil (1-0) took the win on the mound and Evan Waters (0-1) took the loss.
The Lumberjacks will be back in action on Tuesday February 20th against Central Michigan for the first of two midweek games. First pitch is set for 6:30 PM CST. The game will also air on ESPN+.
