Lumberjacks Set to Host SFA Tournament on Opening Weekend

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks baseball team will open their 2024 schedule hosting the SFA Tournament. The 'Jacks will play four games this weekend, two against Central Michigan (CMU) and two against Texas A&M Corpus Christi (TAMUCC).
The Matchups
The 'Jacks will face Central Michigan to open their 2024 campaign. Central Michigan currently holds a 2-0 lead over SFA in the all-time series. The last time these two programs met was in 2018 in Edinburg, Texas, with the Chippewas winning 10-8. This will be the first of two matchups between SFA and CMU in the tournament with two more games to follow on Tuesday (Feb. 20) and Wednesday (Feb. 21). SFA and Texas A&M Corpus Christi last met on March 6, 2022, in Corpus Christi, Texas, which saw the Islanders down the Lumberjacks by a score of 12-11 in a 10-inning affair. SFA currently holds a 26-24 advantage over TAMUCC in the all-time series history.
A Look at SFA
The Lumberjacks went 22-28 overall, and 12-18 in conference play during the 2023 season. SFA returns eight out of nine starters in 2024 with the addition of 14 new faces. The 'Jacks will feature a veteran infield and outfield with returners Will Dixon, Tyree Carr, Cole Hill, Tom Biggs, Nolan Brown, Cal Martin, Julian Thompson, Bryce Yosko, Brock Knoerr, Peyton Parker, Cody Fleischer, Alex Gomez, Sam Adams and Hunter Prescher. The pitching staff experienced the biggest rebuild as they will feature 12 new arms. The 'Jacks also added three new position players in Colton Griffin, Zerick Warren, and Dylan Bourgeios.
A Look at Central Michigan
Central Michigan went 34-23 overall, and 19-11 in conference play during the 2023 season. The Chippewas will play their first game under new head coach Jake Sabol to start their 2024 season. Central Michigan also returns their top two starting pitchers in left-hander Adam Mrakitsch and righty Keegan Batka, who went a combined 16-7 a year ago and both ranked among the top 10 in the Mid Atlantic Conference (MAC) in earned run average. The Chippewas also return starters in the field in Jacob Donahue, Jake Brill, Robby Morgan IV, Danny Wuestenfeld, Nick Dardas and Marquis Jackson.
A Look at Texas A&M Corpus Christi
Texas A&M Corpus Christi went 24-30 overall, and 12-12 in conference play during the 2023 season. The Islanders will open their 2024 season taking on Central Michigan on Friday February 16th. In 2023 the Islanders offense was led by Brendan Ryan. Ryan boasted a .344 batting average along with a .981 OBP and 40 RBI's. The Islanders Pitching staff was led by Colin Purcell who boasted a 4.08 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 63 strikeouts, and 81.2 innings pitched.
