NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin women's basketball program continue their non-conference schedule against No. 23 Gonzaga.
Ladyjacks Defeat Boston College and Finish the Puerto Rico Clasico Undefeated
Stephen F. Austin defeated Boston College, 67-53 Saturday afternoon in the finale of the Puerto Rico Clasico Tournament. SFA improves to 5-1 while BC falls to 5-3.
The first quarter was a battle as neither team held a double-digit lead. SFA went into the quarter break with a six point lead, 18-12. BC made a run in the middle of the second quarter and brought the lead down to three, but then SFA scored the final four points of the quarter to go into halftime with a 28-21 lead. BC scored the first six points of the third quarter to make it a one point game and took the lead for a couple of minutes. The Eagles continued to fight back and kept it a two point game heading into the fourth quarter, 44-42. BC took the lead back early in the second quarter, but then SFA took the lead with eight minutes left in the game and never looked back as they won by 14 points.
SFA led BC in points in the paint (36-28), points off turnovers (15-11), bench points (19-13), field goal percentage (52.1-34.5), three-point percentage (30.8-28.6), and free throw percentage (68.4-50.0). Aiyana Johnson led the Ladyjacks with 18 points, followed by Angel Scott who recorded 14. Johnson also led the team with eight rebounds, followed by Kurstyn Harden who had seven. Jordan Harrison had five assists, while Johnson recorded four. Harrison also recorded two steals which landed her behind Avery Brittingham who recorded three.
A look at Gonzaga
The Gonzaga women's basketball team makes their way to Nacogdoches after going 2-1 in the Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis which took place in Paradise Island, Bahamas. Their first win in the tournament came in an upset against #6 Louisville where they dominated in overtime to win 79-67. That win marked the highest ranked win in program history.
Their next matchup didn't favor the Zags as much as they took their first loss of the season in a close game against Marquette, 70-66. They came within one point within 25 seconds left in the game, but just ran out of time to take control of the lead.
The Bulldogs finished the Battle 4 Atlantis strong by winning their second Top 25 game within three days, this time against #23 Tennessee 73-72. The game saw 15 lead changes and tied nine different times. Yvonne Ejim scored the go-ahead basket with 12.4 seconds left to help Gonzaga secure third place in the tournament.
Kaylynne Truong scored double-digits in all three games in the tournament for the Zags. Brynna Maxwell, Eliza Hollingsworth, and Yvonne Ejim also led the team in scoring and each scored double-digits in two games throughout the tournament.
Ladyjacks Ranked First in Preseason WAC Coaches and Media Polls and Aiyana Johnson Named Preseason WAC Player of the Year
SFA received nine first place votes, while UT Arlington and Grand Canyon each received two.
Johnson, a graduate student from Lee's Summit, Missouri, started all 32 games for the Ladyjacks last year. She had a .541 shooting percentage, 209 total rebounds, 51 assists, 36 blocks, 17 steals and scored 445 points. Johnson averaged 26.1 minutes per game, 6.5 rebounds per game, and 13.9 points per game.
