Johnson Drops 20 in Ladyjacks' Loss to Rcie
Rice University defeated Stephen F. Austin 89-77 Thursday night. Rice improves to 2-0 while SFA falls to 1-1.
The 'Jacks kept the game close within the first two quarters, which included the Ladyjacks holding the lead for nearly 3 minutes in the first quarter of the match. They went into halftime down by only a manageable six points, 41-35.
The third quarter seemed to show good signs of what's to come for the Ladyjacks, as they outscored the Owls in the respective quarter and cut their deficit down to two, 60-58.
However, the fourth quarter favored the Owls as they scored 29 in the quarter to the 'Jacks 10 and pulled away with the win as the clock winded down.
Aiyana Johnson led the team with 20 points and seven rebounds, 12 of those points coming from the free throw line. Jordan Harrison dropped 15 points and led the team with six assists. Avery Brittingham and Kurstyn Harden also put up double digit points on the night, recording 15 and 10 points respectively.
SFA led in field goal percentage (49.1-47.5), free throw percentage (80.8-71.4), fast break points (12-7), and points in the paint (48-24).
A look at Texas Southern
A 3-for-13 shooting performance from the field in the first quarter proved to be too much for the Texas Southern University women's basketball team to overcome in a 75-49 home loss to Old Dominion University.
Ariana Avent led the way for the Tigers (0-2) with 13 points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal as ODU (1-1) shot over 50 percent from the field in the first quarter and took advantage of the cold start from TSU to build a 23-10 lead after the opening quarter.
Micah Gray's jumper at the 6:54 mark of the first quarter ended the scoreless drought for the Tigers to open the game, but it would be a lengthy portion of the first stanza before TSU scored again. Avent's pair of made free throws with 2:34 left in the first quarter cut the deficit down to 21-4 and was the start of an 8-0 run that also included another made free throw from Avent, a layup by Jaida Belton and a three-pointer from Alisa Brown cutting the first quarter deficit down to 21-10.
Alisa Knight came off the bench to play 32 minutes and would be second on the Tigers' roster in points scored with 10 on two made three pointers and four converted free throws while Belton led the Tigers in rebounding with six.
