SFA holds Huskies to three hits, picks up second-straight series sweep of HBU for first Southland sweep of 2019
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Redshirt sophomore center fielder Brittany Crawford went 3-for-3 at the plate and freshman right-hander Kassidy Wilbur notched her fourth complete game shutout of the season Saturday afternoon at SFA Softball Field in Nacogdoches as the SFA softball team earned its first Southland Conference series sweep of 2019 with a 3-0 win over Houston Baptist. The Ladyjacks (18-13, 6-3 Southland), who clinched their second-straight league series win Saturday with a doubleheader sweep, held the visiting Huskies (13-12, 3-6 Southland) to just three hits in the contest to claim SFA's second consecutive series sweep of HBU.
"In the Southland this year, it's very difficult to win three-straight games against the same team," head coach Nicole Dickson said following the game three victory. "I'm very proud of the way we gutted it out mentally today, getting a conference sweep is huge. A weekend like we've had gives us confidence and proves how focused we can be. All weekend we did a great job of making good contact battling with HBU's pitchers. Kassidy Wilbur did everything we asked of her this week and I'm glad she was able to cap it off with a shutout. Brittany Crawford and Bryana Novegil were fantastic at the plate today, coming up with very timely hits for us. We look to carry this momentum with us into next week as we go on the road for four-straight games."
Scoring a run in both the bottom of the first and second innings, the Ladyjacks led 2-0 through two complete. The Huskies got a double in the top of the first but a leadoff single to third base by sophomore second baseman Bryana Novegil and a successful sacrifice bunt by sophomore designated player Triniti Kendzior gave SFA a runner in scoring position with just one out. A HBU fielding error then allowed Novegil to reach home plate for the Ladyjacks' first run of the game.
After Wilbur sat three down in order in the top of the second, a leadoff double to left center field from Crawford in the bottom of the frame led to a base-advancing groundout by junior catcher Lindsay Gregory and an RBI groundout by junior left fielder Madison Clements, giving SFA a 2-0 lead.
The Huskies collected their second and third hits of the game in the top of the fifth and sixth innings, getting a leadoff double in the fifth and a two-out single in the sixth, but the Ladyjacks' did not allow HBU to further its chances with a caught popup and a Wilbur strikeout ending the innings, respectively. SFA added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when a two-out double down the left field line from senior third baseman Lauren Becker led to a Crawford RBI single to right field.
Wilbur retired the side in the top of the seventh to secure her 11th win of the season in the circle. She finished the game with eight strikeouts and only one walk in 25 batters faced, picking up her 10th complete game win of the year.
In addition to Crawford going 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI, Novegil went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Husky right-hander Elliot Estes (4-2) took the loss on the rubber after going the distance and giving up two earned runs and six hits with no strikeouts and a walk.
