Softball claims fourth-straight win, 13th non-conference victory of season at Prairie View A&M
Holding the host Lady Panthers (18-8) to five hits, SFA was flawless in the field and got nine strikeouts from junior right-hander Ashley Kriesel, who tossed four and 1/3 hitless innings in relief.
"Today was excellent execution," head coach Nicole Dickson commented after the triumph. "We were able to work on some things, while also being aggressive. Our defense made some fantastic hustle plays in the field. (Bryana) Novegil and (Margarita) Corona were tough outs all day at the plate as we scored in six of seven innings off of multiple pitchers. That game was exactly what we wanted to accomplish today. Big props to Ashley Kriesel as well, nine strikeouts and no hits coming in relief, that's leadership and focus."
Taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the opening inning, the Ladyjacks loaded the bases with only one out, before scoring the first run of the game on a Lauren Becker walk that allowed sophomore designated player Triniti Kendzior to reach home plate. An RBI single to right field by sophomore second baseman Bryana Novegil in the top of the second put the visiting team ahead 2-0.
SFA scored a trio of runs in the top of the third on three hits, first getting an RBI bunt single from redshirt sophomore center fielder Brittany Crawford before an RBI single to the shortstop by junior catcher Lindsay Gregory made it 4-0. Junior left fielder Madison Clements collected an RBI groundout, allowing redshirt sophomore Brittany Crawford to tag the dish and give the Ladyjacks a commanding 5-0 advantage.
The comfortable margin would be short lived, however, as Prairie View A&M made it a one-run game in the bottom of the third after notching four runs on five hits. A bases-loaded two-out two RBI single from second baseman Destinee Williams made it 5-2 before first baseman Laurisa Hernandez knocked out a two-run homer over the right center field fence, making it 5-4.
Following a Lady Panther fielding error and a base-advancing groundout from Kendzior in the top of the fourth, senior first baseman Margarita Corona stepped to the plate and rocked a two-run shot high over left field. Her seventh home run of the season increasing SFA's lead back to 7-4. After another Prairie View A&M error led off the top of the fifth for the Ladyjacks, Clements doubled to right field before a Novegil RBI single to right field scored an unearned run for Gregory.
The final two runs of the game for SFA came in the top of the sixth when Gregory reached on a fielder's choice for an RBI and Novegil collected her third RBI single to right field. Kriesel (6-4) retired all 13 Lady Panther batters faced, collecting her sixth victory of the season in dominant fashion.
Novegil finished the afternoon 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI and a run scored, while Corona went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI, two runs and two walks. Becker had a 2-for-4 performance with an RBI, run and walk as Clements was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Gregory picked up two RBI and scored twice.
Junior righty Jordan Llinas got the starting nod and pitched two and 2/3 innings inside the circle, fanning five.
The Ladyjacks forced Prairie View A&M to utilize five different pitchers with no Lady Panther hurler tossing more than two innings.
