Arizona State Trips Up Ladyjacks, 3-1

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - For the first time since the 2010 season, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks soccer team walked away without a victory at the SFA Soccer Field, falling 3-1 to Arizona State Sunday afternoon.
SFA (2-1-1) had gone 23 consecutive home matches without a loss or tie before Sunday's defeat, dating all the way back to a 2-1 overtime loss to UTEP on Sept. 3, 2010. The match against Arizona St. was the first-ever in the series and one of the top premier teams the Ladyjacks had hosted in Nacogdoches.
"What a great opportunity to give our players a glimpse at where we want to go," Crittenden said. "It is games like these that really showcase the things you do well and the areas that we need to improve upon. Seventy minutes of the match were minutes that we want to be sure to build upon in which we created several chances that could have gone our way. The other 20 minutes were minutes that we must learn from and be sure to prevent from occurring again. That comes down to our staff and how we prepare our players. "
The Ladyjacks had just one less shot than the Sun Devils (2-1-1), mustering 12 shots to ASU's 13. However, after playing nearly 320:00 minutes of scoreless competition, SFA allowed their first goal of the season in the 19th minute of the first half on Cali Farquharson's third goal of the season.
The contest played deep into the second half and SFA missed on a few chances to tie the game before the Sun Devils struck again in the 79th minute on a Devin Marshall goal, beating SFA goalkeeper Morgan Glick (1-1-1) to her right to push the lead to 2-0. Just six minutes later Farquharson added the clincher with her second goal of the day, putting back in a shot after a save from Glick.
Junior forward Zuri Prince helped deny a shutout for SFA, scoring their lone goal with just over 20 seconds remaining on a blast from over 25 yards away. Prince finished the afternoon as the Ladyjacks leader in shots with five, four of which were on goal.
Arizona St. goalkeeper Chandler Morris improved to 2-1-1 making four saves while Glick fell to 1-1-1, making three stops and allowing the three goals.
The Ladyjacks will now get a much-needed four days off before they travel out west to face New Mexico St. on Friday, Sept. 6 and then head to El Paso to play UTEP on Sunday, Sept. 8.
"As for next week, we won't change a thing," Crittenden said. "We will prepare the same way and look to compete on the road against New Mexico State and UTEP, both very good teams. There is no doubt that we will be a better team because of this game today."
SFA will next play at home on Sept. 13 when they host the LSU Tigers.
