Thurmond adds second goal on season; Musser reaches 10 saves on the year
JONESBORO, Ark. — Stephen F. Austin (1-3-0) fell to Arkansas State (1-2-1) with a final score of 2-1 on Thursday at the A-State Soccer Complex. The Ladyjacks managed to score in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome Arkansas State's early lead.
The first half began with SFA establishing an early presence as Sawyer Kohutek tried on goal five minutes into the match. Brandie Musser provided a solid defensive effort by saving shots at 15:06 and 21:10. The Red Wolves were able to break through at 22:19 with a goal by Elleigh Newcomb, assisted by Kennedy Horn. SFA continued to press, highlighted by a shot from Alexa Alvarez at 39:27 that was saved by Taylor Sweat. The first half concluded with the Ladyjacks trailing 1-0.
The Jacks equalized early in the second half as Carlie Thurmond found the back of the net at the 51:41 mark, assisted by Kamrynn Davis. Leslie Razo nearly put SFA on the board earlier, but her attempt struck the woodwork. Davis found the rebound off Razo's shot and delivered it to Thurmond, who finished the chance to cap a strong period of offensive pressure for the Ladyjacks.
With the Ladyjacks maintaining momentum for much of the second half, Arkansas State's Lucia Flores converted a late penalty kick at 89:12 to give the Red Wolves the lead. Flores has now scored in back-to-back matches, with both goals coming from the penalty spot. Her late strike proved to be the difference as Arkansas State held on for a 2-1 victory over SFA at the final whistle.
Thurmond notched the team's only goal, adding to her team-leading statistics of four points on the season. Davis contributed with an assist, helping set up the scoring opportunity for Thurmond. Kohutek was active on the field, tallying two shots, with one on target. Musser played the full 90 minutes in goal, making two saves against 16 shots faced, and reaching the 10-save mark on the season.
Stephen F. Austin holds a record of 1-3-0. Arkansas State stands at 1-2-1 overall.
