NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Senior Whitney Cormier scored a team-high 25 points, but it wasn't enough stop Lamar who rallied for a 92-87 victory Saturday evening at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The loss drops SFA to 11-9 on the season, and 6-3 in Southland Conference play.
Both teams attacked from the perimeter early burying a total of four three-pointers in the first 2:30 of the game. Lamar claimed an early 10-6 lead, but it wouldn't last for long. The Ladyjacks went on a run and held a 44-29 lead, with 6:05 remaining in the first. SFA appeared to be on the verge of a blowout, before the visitors slowly began to chip away at the lead. Lamar trimmed the lead down three, before junior Ebony Alexander buried a three-pointer to give SFA a 51-45 lead heading into the locker room.
The Ladyjacks were 20-of-44 (.455) from the floor, while the Lady Cardinals shot the ball at a 52-percent clip in the opening half. Despite a height advantage for LU, SFA also claimed an advantage on the glass, 23-17.
The second half was a much closer affair as neither team could muster more than an eight-point lead. Lamar continued to shoot the ball well, while SFA's offense began to struggle. The Ladyjacks could only muster a 10-for-39 performance in the second half. With SFA unable to find the mark in the second, Lamar again started to chip away at the SFA lead. The Lady Cardinals claimed their first advantage of the game, 69-67, with less than 10 minutes remaining.
With Lamar back in front, fouls became an issue as junior Toni Davis and sophomore Whitney Cormier fouled out of the game. Behind 26 points from Jenna Plumley, Lamar was able to push its advantage to eight points. After a couple of late threes, SFA was able to cut the lead down three, 88-85, with seconds remaining, but Lamar hit its free throws down the stretch to put the game away.
SFA finished the game 30-of-83 (.361) from the floor, while Lamar was 30-of-65 (.462). SFA maintained a heavy advantage on the glass outrebounding their visitors, 52-39. The Ladyjacks bench outscored Lamar's reserves, 24-9.
Alexander finished the game with 14 points, and 11 rebounds, while sophomore Tammara Marion added 17 points. Junior Decreasha Goodner scored 13 points, and Conwright added 11. Davis struggled offensively, but she was huge on the glass pulling down 10 rebounds.
SFA returns to action Wednesday when they travel to Natchitoches, La., to take on Northwestern State. The game against the SLC East Division rival is slated to begin at 7 p.m., from Prather Coliseum.
