NATCHITOCHES, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks dominated from the opening tip picking up an 81-63 victory over Northwestern State Wednesday evening in Natchitoches, La. The victory moves SFA to 12-9 on the season and 7-3 in Southland Conference play.
The Ladyjacks opened the game hitting eight of their first 16 field goals and jumped out to a 25-13 lead. SFA continued the hot shooting throughout the first half pushing their lead to 23, 36-13, with just under four minutes remaining. SFA kept up the intensity taking a 45-17 lead into the locker room.
The Ladyjacks finished the half shooting 49 percent from the floor, while Northwestern State was held below 30 percent. The Lady Demons also struggled to hold on to the basketball turning it over 13 times in the opening half. SFA converted the turnovers into 13 points.
Junior Chantol Drennan was key in the Ladyjacks' first half run scoring nine points. She finished the game with 10 points. The Ladyjacks' bench outscored Northwestern State's reserves 17-4 in the opening half.
The Lady Demons were not able to make a game of it in the second half. SFA shot 49 percent from the floor, including a 7-of-14 (.500) performance from beyond the arc. Although Northwestern State shot better in the second half, they were held to 35 percent for the game. SFA was led by senior Whitney Cormier's 20 points. Sophomore Tammara Marion added 16, and junior Toni Davis netted 15.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday when they travel to Lake Charles, La., to face McNeese State. The game against the Cowgirls is slated to begin at 2 p.m. from Burton Coliseum.
