HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Sam Houston State only attempted eight shots, but put seven on goal and found the net twice in a 2-1 win over Stephen F. Austin Friday night at Pritchett Field.
The Bearkats took control with an early goal then netted an insurance score in the second half to hold off SFA. The Ladyjacks outshot Sam Houston, 20-8, but couldn't get on the scoreboard until Edwina Forbes put a goal in with less than a minute to play.
The loss moves SFA to 11-5-1 on the year and 4-2-1 in Southland Conference play. The defeat comes on the heels of a 2-1 loss at Southeastern Louisiana last week, marking just the third time in the last seven-plus seasons for a Ladyjack team to lose consecutive games in Southland play. Sam Houston improves to 9-8-1 overall and 5-2-0 in league action.
"I thought Sam executed at the critical moments in the game tonight," SFA head coach Tony Amato said. "We struggled to find any rhythm in our attack, which impacted the result."
SFA out-shot Sam Houston, 3-1, in the first eight minutes, including a narrow miss off the post by Kim Kimmel. But the Bearkats grabbed an early lead when Natalie Johnson scored from 30 yards out in the 18th minute.
The Ladyjacks went to halftime with a 9-4 edge in shots, and put three on target, but still trailed by a goal.
Sam Houston wasted no time getting back on the attack in the second period. Less than three minutes into the half, Emily Edenstrom scored unassisted to make it a 2-0 Bearkat lead.
SFA fired off 10 shots after that, putting three on goal, but couldn't find the net until Forbes banged one home off a corner kick at the 89:17 mark. Camille Royer got the assist on the play.
SFA used both its goalkeepers in the contest with Courtney Bauder getting the start and playing the entire first half. Lacey Lee (1-1-0) played the final 45 minutes. Each `keeper gave up one goal. Bauder recorded three saves, while Lee picked up two stops.
The Ladyjacks will finish off the regular season next weekend with home games against Texas State and UTSA.
"Our execution needs to be sharper in order to beat a conference rival, especially on the road," Amato said. "The bye on Sunday gives us an extra day this week to improve for two tough opponents."
