NATCHITOCHES, La. - Stephen F. Austin scored two goals in each half and held its opponent to fewer than four shots on goal for the fourth consecutive game, rolling to a 4-0 win at Northwestern State Friday night in the Southland Conference opener for both teams.
The win gets SFA out to a 1-0 start in Southland play for the ninth consecutive season and extends the Ladyjacks' win streak to six straight games. That's the longest such run since SFA won 11 consecutive contests in 2005.
"I was really happy with our performance," head coach Tony Amato said. "The team was determined to start off conference play with a win, and that showed in our execution throughout the match. We showed great composure on the ball and finished our scoring chances. I was very proud of the effort tonight."
The Ladyjacks are now 8-3-0 on the year, while Northwestern State falls to 5-7-0.
Kylie Louw opened the scoring for SFA with a goal from the top of the 18-yard box in the 30th minute.
Barely a minute after Louw struck, Laura Sadler found the net from 20 yards out to give SFA a 2-0 cushion. Sadler's goal was her third of the season, coming on the heels of her two-goal performance at Arkansas-Pine Bluff last weekend.
Louw put the game out of reach in the 64th minute, when she took a cross from Camille Royer and buried a shot from point-blank range in the back of the net. The goal was her fifth of the year and moved her into a tie with Kim Kimmel and Jordan King for the team lead. Despite her two-game absence, Louw now leads SFA with 14 total points. The two-goal effort was her second this season.
Edwina Forbes capped the scoring five minutes later, when she headed home a corner kick service off the foot of Royer. The goal was the first in Forbes' career and gave SFA its second-best single-game scoring total this season.
SFA held the Demons to just eight shots for the game. Senior goalkeeper Courtney Bauder recorded saves on all three Northwestern shots on goal to earn her second shutout and improve to 7-3-0 this season.
The three shots on goal issued to the Demons tied for the third-fewest allowed by SFA this season and marked the seventh time in 2010 for the Ladyjacks to hold their opponent to five or fewer. No Northwestern player registered more than one attempt, as the Demons finished with eight shots total.
Eleven of the Ladyjacks' 17 shots were on goal. Louw and Brenda Salazar each attempted three shots to lead the team. All three of Salazar's attempts were on goal.
SFA will try to run its win streak to seven games Sunday when the Ladyjacks take on Central Arkansas. The game is set for a 1 p.m. start from Conway, Ark.
