CONWAY, Ark. - Stephen F. Austin held Central Arkansas to only two shots Sunday, marking the fewest attempts by a Ladyjack opponent this season. But one of those shots found the net, leading to a 1-1 draw in the second game of the Southland Conference season.
The tie is the first this season for SFA (8-3-1, 1-0-1) and ends the Ladyjacks' longest winning streak since 2005 at six games. Central Arkansas moves to 4-5-2 overall and 0-1-1 in Southland action.
"We played well in the first half," head coach Tony Amato said. "We created several scoring chances, but only had one goal to show for it."
The Ladyjacks took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute on a goal by Laura Sadler. She sophomore took aim from 30 yards out and fired a shot that tipped off the UCA goalkeeper and in. It marked Sadler's fourth goal of the year and gives her three straight games with a scoring strike.
SFA carried that advantage to halftime, along with a 10-0 edge in shots attempted. Central Arkansas didn't register a shot until the 50th minute, but the Bears' first attempt turned out to be the equalizer. Kristin Pollard scored on a set piece to tie the score.
She would take aim again in the 70th minute, but her second shot sailed wide. Central Arkansas did not record another shot in the game.
Ladyjack senior Kim Kimmel was issued a yellow card shortly after Pollard's second shot. Kimmel picked up a second yellow in the 82nd minute, sending her to the sideline and leaving SFA a man down for the balance of the match.
"The goal early in the second half, combined with us being down to ten players, made it an up-hill challenge," Amato said. "We will learn from the match today and be better next weekend."
SFA banged out seven shots in the second period and three more in overtime to give the Ladyjacks a 20-2 advantage for the game. Sadler finished with six shots - three on goal - to tie Kylie Louw for the team lead. Four of Louw's six attempts were on goal. Kimmel, Melissa Gaudet and Jayne Jahnke each posted one shot on goal.
Goalkeeper Courtney Bauder moved to 7-3-1 on the season, playing 110 minutes in net without registering a save.
Sunday's defensive smothering of Central Arkansas marked the fourth time in the last five games for SFA to hold the opposition to five shots or fewer. Only once during the Ladyjacks' current seven-game unbeaten streak has an opponent registered more than 10 shots.
The Bears' one shot on goal ties for the fewest given up this season. SFA opponents have averaged just two shots on goal per game over the last five contests. The Ladyjacks have held their foes to five or fewer shots on goal eight times this season.
SFA will play home games against Lamar and McNeese State this weekend.
