SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Despite an 18-5 advantage in shots on goal, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team found the net just once Sunday in a 1-1 double-overtime tie at UTSA. The tie is SFA's first of the season and leaves the Ladyjacks 7-8-1 on the year.
UTSA took the lead early with a goal in the 26th minute. SFA didn't tie the count until the 78th minute, when senior Megan Cash scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season. But the Ladyjacks were unable to connect for the game-winner and moved into a tie with the Roadrunners in the league standings at 4-2-1 in Southland Conference play.
"When you tie, one team always feels like it lost and one always feels like it won," SFA head coach George Van Linder said. "I felt like we lost today. We had plenty of chances with the shots and free kicks to capitalize."
For the game, SFA fired a season-high 33 shots, while holding the Roadrunners to eight, the sixth time this season the Ladyjacks have limited an opponent to single digits in the shots column.
But UTSA made the most of its chances early, finding the net on just its third shot attempt of the game. Clare Jakubowski passed the ball into the box, and Chelsea Zimmerman scored on one touch past a diving Courtney Bauder.
Less than a minute after the goal, Cash hit the post at the other end, and SFA out-shot the Roadrunners, 5-0, for the balance of the first half, but to no avail.
After the break, the Ladyjacks were just as stingy on defense, holding UTSA to only two shots in the second half. At the other end, SFA rattled off 13 attempts, with the 10th one proving to be the equalizer.
Freshman Kylie Louw crossed the ball into the box for Cash, who finished it off to tie the score with just 12 minutes left.
The Ladyjacks put up four shots combined in the two overtime periods and held UTSA to three attempts, with all three coming in the first 10-minute session.
"I was proud of the way we came back after giving them the early lead," Van Linder said. "That is something to build on for the rest of the season."
Bauder finished with four saves in 110 minutes of action. Louw took a game-high seven shots with five on goal, and Cash fired off six attempts with four finding their mark. Junior Kim Kimel posted five shots, and freshman Laura Sadler and senior Kelli Wilson each took four shots.
Wilson played against her sister, Brittany, a UTSA sophomore.
"I was happy with the way Kelli Wilson played," Van Linder said. "She was marked by her sister for much of the game. It had to be hard to battle like both teams did and also do it against your sister. I am sure her family is glad that this game is over."
The Ladyjacks will be back in Nacogdoches Friday to begin the final weekend of the regular season. SFA hosts Northwestern State in a 7 p.m. game, then wraps up the year on Sunday with a 1 p.m. tilt against Central Arkansas.
