Texas State Edges Ladyjacks

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Serena Hines scored the game-winning goal with eight minutes to play in the first overtime Friday to lead Texas State to a 1-0 win over Stephen F. Austin. Hines' goal in the 96th minute was the only real edge for the Bobcats in a game that was as closely contested as any SFA has played this season.
The scoring strike proved to be the difference not just in the final score but in the final shot count, giving Texas State a 15-14 advantage in shot attempts. The win keeps the Bobcats undefeated atop the Southland Conference with an 11-5-1 overall record and a 6-0-1 mark in league play. With the loss, SFA falls to 7-8-0 on the season and 4-2-0 in Southland action.
"We are certainly proud of the fight our team had in the second half," SFA head coach George Van Linder said. "We came out a bit sluggish in the first half, and you can't do that against a quality team like Texas State. We have to rebound from this and take care of business Sunday."
The Ladyjacks will wrap up their two-game road trip Sunday with a 1 p.m. game at UTSA.
Friday night, Texas State was the early aggressor, firing six shots and earning five corner kicks before the Ladyjacks had registered a shot attempt. Seven of the Bobcats' nine first-half shots were on goal, but SFA goalkeeper Courtney Bauder was up to the challenge, turning all seven away.
SFA got its first shot of the night in the 21st minute off the foot of freshman Laura Sadler. Eight minutes later, junior Kim Kimmel was fouled in the box on a shot, earning a penalty kick. Her attempt was smothered by a sprawling Mandi Mawyer, and SFA didn't record another shot the rest of the half.
The Ladyjacks opened the second period in a fever, launching four shots on goal between the 46th and 52nd minutes. Kimmel took aim twice, with freshman Kylie Louw and senior Megan Cash each notching one shot in that stretch.
Two minutes later, SFA unleashed another flurry of shots. Cash fired wide in the 54th minute, then Kimmel pounded a shot off the crossbar in the 57th minute. She followed her own rebound with a shot that sailed high.
The Bobcats didn't post their first shot attempt of the second half until the 62nd minute, but Bauder was there for the save, as she was again in the 67th minute. The junior recorded two more saves down the stretch to send the game to overtime, as SFA could not find the net, despite out-shooting Texas State, 10-4 in the second frame.
SFA junior Camille Royer opened the overtime period with a shot on goal, but Texas State earned a corner kick at the other end of the field. A shot off the corner was deflected by a Ladyjack defender, and Hines got her foot on the rebound for her second goal of the season.
Bauder finished with a season-high 11 saves, the first double-digit save performance since she posted 10 against McNeese State last season. Kimmel took a game-best six shots with four on goal.
