STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks Baseball Team (9-13, 2-7 SLC) defeated the hosting Tarleton State University Texans (9-14, 0-0 WAC) in the series opener on Friday evening.
The Lumberjacks wasted no time breaking the ice on scoring Friday night as back-to-back singles from Josh Ibe and Mark Henning put a pair of runners on for Dante Turgeon. Turgeon would line a ball through the right side to score Ibe and give SFA an early 1-0 advantage.
Cody Templeton would toss a pair of scoreless frames to start the night, however, the Texans would plate a pair of runs in the home half of the third to hold a 2-1 lead after three full innings of play. The 'Jacks would respond back in the top half of the fifth as following a Cooper Schneider leadoff single, Josh Ibe would crush his fourth home run of the week to left field, scoring Schneider and pulling SFA back ahead 3-2.
Templeton would continue to stymie the Texans bats as he would pitch scoreless fourth, fifth, and sixth innings as SFA still held onto a 3-2 lead heading to the seventh. The Lumberjacks would plate a pair of critical insurance runs in the top of the seventh as a Josh Ibe Walk and Mark Henning single would put runners on the corners for Dante Turgeon once again. Turgeon would again answer the call for SFA and come through in the clutch with an RBI single to center field, scoring pinch runner River Curs and giving SFA a 4-2 lead.
SFA would not be done scoring in the road half of the seventh as after Kevin Duran was hit by a pitch, Ethan Adkisson would reach on a fielder's choice, scoring Mark Henning in the process and staking SFA to a 5-2 lead. Those runs would be all SFA would need as the bullpen trio of Jonathan Valdez, Kadin Munson, and Elian Balmaceda locked down the seventh, eighth, and ninth for SFA to secure the series-opening win 5-2 for SFA.
Cody Templeton (3-1) picked up his third win of the season, while Jake Burcham (1-3) took the loss on the mound for Tarleton. Meanwhile, Elian Balmaceda (S2) secured his second save of the season tonight for the 'Jacks.
