NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks Baseball Team (5-7, 1-2 SLC) fell at home 3-2 to the New Orleans University Privateers (6-4, 2-1 SLC) in the series finale.
Both teams traded a scoreless first inning, before the Privateers had a walk and two straight singles in the top half of the second to put New Orleans ahead 1-0. The Privateers would tack on two more runs in the top of the third to take a 3-0 lead over SFA. The Lumberjacks defense, however, would keep New Orleans from tacking on more runs as Reid Boyett received a timely 4-6-3 double-play to end the top half of the third with New Orleans ahead 3-0.
After a scoreless fourth inning from both teams, the Lumberjacks broke the ice in the bottom of the fifth as following a one-out Ethan Adkisson single and a Dylan Hummel walk, a perfect Cermodrick Bland sacrifice bunt advanced Adkisson to third and Hummel to second. With two on and two out, Josh Ibe would come through in the clutch for SFA as he would lace a triple down the right-field line to score both Adkisson and Hummel and cut the Privateers lead to 3-2 after five full innings.
Pitching and defense would continue to dominate as following a scoreless sixth from both sides, as Reid Boyett and the SFA defense would turn a nifty 4-3 double play to end the top of the seventh with SFA still trailing by just one at 3-2 after seven full innings.
Reid Boyett would continue to keep the Privateers bats silent as he would pitch a scoreless eighth and ninth inning keeping the score at 3-2 heading to the bottom of the ninth and finishing his day with 6.2 scoreless innings pitched. Unfortunately, the Lumberjacks were unable to find the equalizing run in the home half of the ninth and fell 3-2 in the rubber match against New Orleans.
