SEATTLE, Wash.- The Stephen F. Austin's Softball Team (9-25, 1-4) travels to the west coast for their next conference series as they get set to square off with the Seattle University Redhawks (11-19, 3-3).
Last Weekend at a Glance for SFA:
The Lumberjacks will look to build off their most recent game in which they claimed a 3-1 win over the Utah Tech Trailblazers to close out a four-game homestand and secure their first conference win of the season. Despite losing the first two games against Utah Tech, the pitching staff kept the Trailblazers bats quiet all weekend as Utah Tech was only able to manage three total runs over the three-game series.
It's Getting Hot in Here:
Kelby Robbins has been on a heater at the plate recently as she will carry a four-game hitting streak into this weekend series with Seattle and continues to hold her batting average over .300 for the season. However, Robbins is far from the only Lumberjack hitter experiencing great success at the plate recently. Madison Nguyen, Ellie Vance, Lexi Benson, and Mallory Webb have all recorded a hit in four of their last five games. Nguyen is fresh off a three-hit performance on Sunday, Vance has recorded three RBIs during that span, Webb has stolen three bases in that stretch, while Benson has recorded a double, walk, and stolen base in that same stretch of games. Chloe Reneau has been finding her stride at the plate as well as she has recorded three hits over her last three games, and six hits over her last five games.
Let's Take a Stroll:
The 'Jacks have displayed incredible patience and discipline at the plate this season as they have drawn 90 walks on the season, which is third most in the WAC this season. In their series finale against Utah Tech, SFA drew five walks as a team and have now drawn a walk in 11 of their last 12 games drawing multiple walks in eight of those 11 games. Lexi Benson has drawn a team-high 12 walks this season, but is far from the only one with a walk this season as 16 different Lumberjacks have also recorded a walk on the year, with 15 of the 16 players drawing multiple walks.
SFA's Shutdown Staff:
The Lumberjack pitching staff appears to be in midseason form as they stymied the Trailblazer hitters all weekend long. The Lumberjack pitching staff was an elite unit against Utah Tech as they pitched three straight gems in the circle, allowing just three runs over the three-game series, issuing just two walks, while totaling 17 strikeouts as a staff, and allowing just six hits over the final two games of the series. Brooke Gainous continues to give hitters fits at the plate as she has allowed just two runs over her last 16.1 innings pitched, lowering her season era to an impressive 3.10 mark, while showing unparalleled command as she walked just eight batters this season. However, Aydenne Brown and Alexis Telford should not be forgotten about in this pitching staff as both have experienced similar levels of success in the circle this season. Brown has been a hitter's worst nightmare recently as she has struck out at least eight batters in three of her last four starts and is currently limiting hitters to a mere .212 batting average this season, while leading the team in innings pitched (71.0), and strikeouts (58). Alexis Telford has been a workhorse for SFA as she has pitched in 69 innings this season, striking out 45 batters, while throwing a team-high six complete games, and is coming off her best performance of the season that saw her throw seven innings of one-run ball against Utah Tech while striking out seven hitters, did not walk a batter all game, and did allow a run past the first inning.
Don't Blink or You Might Miss Them:
The Lumberjack lineup has no shortage of speed on their hands and they're not afraid to show it as eight different players have recorded a stolen base this season. Mallory Webb spearheads the charge with her five stolen bases, while Ellie Vance and Madison Nguyen follow closely behind as both have four stolen bases apiece. Chloe Reneau and Kaylee Paul have formed a dynamic duo on the basepaths as both have swiped three bases this season, while Lexi Benson has a pair of stolen bases on the year. However, don't overlook Brittany Coe and Ja'Aira Fletcher on the bases as both have also recorded a stolen base as well this season.
"Nguyen"ing on Both Sides of the Ball:
Madison Nguyen made sure to leave her mark on the series against the Trailblazers as she had great success at the plate and on defense. Nguyen went 3-4 from the plate on Sunday morning as she slapped three consecutive singles from her leadoff spot, while scoring her ninth run of the year. However, more impressively Nguyen continued her fantastic season as she showed her defensive versatility on Saturday afternoon as she added another highlight reel catch to her season total by laying out for a full extension catch on a sinking line drive to shallow left field to rob Carly Eldredge of a hit.
Comfortable in Conference:
So far this season, Amiah Galcatcher has been right at home in conference play as she is batting .500 in conference play with a pair of doubles. However, Galcatcher is not the only one having success in conference play as Chloe Reneau has been on a hitting tear recently as she has recorded a team-high six hits in conference play, while Lexi Benson and Madison Nguyen have formed a dynamic hitting duo with both recording five hits in conference play. Alexis Telford continues to showcase her versatile playstyle as in addition to her solid pitching efforts, Telford has a team-high four RBIs in conference play while she and Ellie Vance both have homeruns in conference.
Keeping Up with the 'Jacks: Season Stats Edition:
Kelby Robbins continues to be the model of consistency for SFA this season as she leads the team with her .311 batting average, totaling 23 hits, and 26 total bases. Madison Nguyen, Lexi Benson, and Emily Land have formed a three-headed hitting monster as all three are tied for the team lead in RBIs with 10 apiece. Nguyen has started all 34 games for SFA this season, while Land and Benson have been extra-base machines this year as Land leads the team with her five doubles, while Benson has smacked a team-high five triples, which has her tied for fourth most in the country currently. Meanwhile, Ellie Vance has been a tough nut to crack for opposing pitchers as she has struck out just three times in 33 games this season. The Lumberjack defense has been busy this season as Alex Dubose, Chloe Reneau, and Emily Land all have over 90 putouts, while Reneau, Ellie Vance, and Kelby Robbins have formed a well-rounded infield trio as all three have combined for 114 assists defensively this season.
Redhawks at a Glance:
The Seattle University Redhawks enter this weekend series carrying an 11-18 record while carrying an even 3-3 conference record after most recently taking 2/3 from the Abilene Christian Wildcats. In their most recent game on Wednesday evening, the Redhawks fell 5-3 to the visiting Oregon State Beavers in just their fourth home game this season. The Redhawks are led by Head Coach Geoff Hirai who is in his ninth season overseeing the Redhawks softball program. Hirai has won over 200 games as a head coach and has led the Redhawks to a WAC Tournament Semifinals appearance in four of his eight years as head coach.
Sydney Frankenberger has been a solid all-around hitter for the Redhawks this season as she leads the team with a .379 average, while tallying two doubles, two triples, and two homeruns this season, and leading the team in stolen bases with four. Mikee Morris has been an RBI machine for Seattle as she has driven in a team-high 17 RBIs, while Taylor Fitch leads the team with three homeruns on the year. Tai Wilson has drawn a team-high 16 walks, while Lily Garcia has struck out just four times in 29 games started this season.
Stefanie Madrigal and Nicola Simpson have been busy this season for Seattle as both have thrown over 40 innings this season. Madrigal has been the ace of the staff as she leads the team in era (3.44), wins (six), complete games (four), innings pitched (63.0), and strikeouts (34). Simpson has a pair of wins on the season including a complete game shutout against the UConn Huskies where she struck out six batters and allowed just four total baserunners. Meanwhile, Avari Morris has been a valuable arm out of the bullpen for Seattle as she has locked down a pair of saves this season, while striking out 20 hitters in 31.2 innings pitched.
There's a First Time for Everything:
This three-game weekend series will feature the first time SFA has made the trip to Seattle despite these two teams playing six games between each other. So far, the series is tied at three wins apiece with the most recent game seeing Seattle claim a nail-biting 10-9 win over SFA in the WAC Tournament semifinals.
