ST. GEORGE, Utah- The Stephen F. Austin's Softball Team (7-20, 0-0) kicks off conference play for the 2024 season when they get set to travel to Utah to square off with the Southern Utah University Thunderbirds (10-10, 0-0) for a three-game weekend series.
Yesterday at a Glance for SFA:
Yesterday was pretty fun for both the players and fans of SFA Softball as the Lumberjacks returned home for the first time in 10 days yesterday and made sure to show how hard of a team they can be to beat on their home field. Between two games against the visiting Texas Southern Tigers, the 'Jacks totaled 17 hits, 15 runs, and drew seven walks, while sweeping the midweek doubleheader over Texas Southern with ease. The two wins against the Tigers yesterday moved SFA's home record to 4-5 on the season, while extending their winning streak over Texas Southern to 12 games. So far this season, the 'Jacks have scored double-digit runs in three games two of them being at home, and have now scored both 10 runs and eight runs in a single inning so far this season at home.
Something Contagious is in the Air:
SFA's hitting is finding their stride at the perfect time as they have now recorded seven or more hits in five of their last seven games and will look to continue to trend against Southern Utah. A large reason for the offensive success lately? The entire lineup is producing from top to bottom whether that be through walks or hits as SFA continues to make life difficult for opposing pitchers by stuffing the basepaths with runners all game long. In game one of the doubleheader yesterday, seven different Lumberjacks reached base, while three different players recorded an RBI. Lexi Benson (2-3, 3B, R, RBI) and Ellie Vance (2-3, 3B, 2 RBI) led the way in game one of the doubleheader. Meanwhile, the 'Jacks took it a step further in the second game of the doubleheader as nine different players reached base in the blowout 11-0 win, and four different players recorded an RBI. Emily Land (2-2, R, BB, RBI) and Kelby Robbins (2-2, R) helped power the offense in game two. Not only did the Lumberjacks work seven walks as a team yesterday, but their discipline was also on full display as they struck out just four times between the two wins as a team.
SFA's Shutdown Staff:
As impressive as the SFA offense was between the two wins yesterday was, their pitching may have been even more impressive. Between the two games, SFA's pitching staff allowed just a mere two hits, one run, and issued just two walks, while striking out a combined 14 hitters. Aydenne Brown set the tone early for SFA's pitching staff as she struck out the first six hitters of the game, while carrying a no-hitter into the seventh inning, and pitching her fourth complete game of the season thanks to a nine-strikeout performance. Brooke Gainous and Kayla Palomino followed suit of Brown in game two of the doubleheader as the two combined to throw five innings of one-hit ball, walking none, and striking out a combined five hitters. Gainous threw three perfect innings striking out four hitters, before Palomino took over and pitched the final two innings allowing just a single while forcing five groundouts from Texas Southern, including recording the final three outs by herself on three straight comebackers.
Don't Blink or You Might Miss Them:
With SFA clogging the basepaths in their most recent games, it has led to more stolen base opportunities for a team that has plenty of speed to spare. So far this season, seven different Lumberjack players have recorded at least one stolen base. Ellie Vance continues to showcase her scorching speed as she leads the base stealing effort for SFA with her four stolen bases this season, while opposing catchers can only imagine throwing out Kaylee Paul and Madison Nguyen who have formed a dynamic duo of their own on the basepaths as both are a perfect 3-3 on stolen bases this season. Mallory Webb and the speed she has flashed all season long while manning center field has seen her steal two bases, while Chloe Reneau, Brittany Coe, and Ja'Aira Fletcher are not to be overlooked on the basepaths as all three have also stolen a base this season.
Someone's Heating Up:
With the recent surge in offensive production from the SFA offense there are a number of hitters who have started to string together impressive performances at the plate. Emily Land is almost unstoppable right now as she has recorded three multi-hit efforts in her last four games, batting .600 (6-for-10) during that span, while recording an RBI in all three multi-hit games, and coming just a few feet short of her first homerun of the season in the 11-0 win over the Tigers. Kelby Robbins has been just as hot as Land as Robbins has recorded a hit in four of her last five games, including a pair of two-hit performances, while flashing the leather over at the hot corner with some gold-glove worthy plays. Meanwhile, Madison Nguyen and Mallory Webb keep doing their thing at the plate as Nguyen is on a four-game hitting streak while continuing to man the leadoff spot for SFA, while Webb is on a four-game on-base streak of her own that has seen her score a pair of runs while showcasing the depth and versatility of this SFA offense.
Keeping Up with the 'Jacks: Season Stats Edition:
Kelby Robbins leads all qualified SFA hitters with her .316 batting average, recording two doubles, and three RBIs so far this season. Madison Nguyen continues to be the definition of consistency for SFA as she has started all 27 games this season, compiling a .284 batting average, while driving in a team-high 10 RBIs. Lexi Benson continues to be a dual-threat hitter for SFA as she leads the team in walks (11), while also leading the team in OPS (.782), and slugging percentage (.429) while she has showcased her sneaky speed as evidenced by her three doubles and four triples this season. Meanwhile, Emily Land's recent hot streak has seen her raise her slash line to .357/.807/.429 this season while tying Lexi Benson with nine RBIs. Aydenne Brown's gem in game one of the doubleheader saw her lower her season era to 3.29, as she leads the team in strikeouts with 40, and is holding opposing hitters to a paltry .200 batting average this season. Brooke Gainous continues to showcase excellent control as she has walked just seven batters in 38.2 innings, while holding a 3.80 era this season, while Alexis Telford continues to be a workhorse as she has thrown a team-high 56 innings, striking out 38 hitters, and throwing four complete games this season.
Thunderbirds at a Glance:
The Southern Utah University Thunderbirds will enter this weekend series carrying an even 10-10 record and will be looking to bounce back from their most recent loss to UNLV. The Thunderbirds are led by Head Coach Don Don Williams who is entering her fifth season at the helm of the Thunderbirds softball program. Despite losing their last game, the Thunderbirds have won three of their last four games and have only played one home game this season.
The Thunderbird offense has no shortage of power as Karmyna Becerra leads the team with her .391/1.034/.609 slash line, while clubbing a team-high nine doubles this season, and crushing two homeruns. Ariyana Miranda has showcased her light tower power all season long as she has hit a team-high seven homeruns, while driving in a team-leading 16 RBIs. Emily Gonzalez has drawn a team-high 13 walks this season, while Alayah Toscano and Laurie Cooke both have five stolen bases on the campaign.
Keimon Winston leads the Southern Utah pitching staff with her 3.86 era walking just seven batters and striking out 22 hitters in 29 innings. Emily Delgado has pitched a team-leading 56.2 innings, punching out 35 hitters, and throwing three complete games on the season. Delaney Baker rounds out the staff of Southern Utah as she has thrown 34.1 innings, while appearing in 13 games and drawing a start in five of those games.
You Look Mighty Familiar:
This weekend's series will feature just the second time these two schools have played against each other all-time as SFA currently leads the series 2-1. These two schools met once last season for a three-game series in Utah, with SFA winning two of three over Southern Utah as SFA scored at least eight runs in all three games and scored double-digit runs in both wins.
