NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The SFA Women's Volleyball Team looks to continue their great start to the season in the second SFA Tournament of the year. They'll try to improve on their 8-2 record vs Sam Houston, Tulsa, and then a big one vs Ole Miss. Fans, stick around after Thursday night's match against Sam Houston as we celebrate Head Coach Debbie Humphreys 800th career win.
A Look at the Ladyjacks:
SFA comes into this weekend riding high after a 2-1 showing in the Lumberjack Classic in Northern Arizona, although they will try and rebound after dropping the last match to a very strong undefeated Arizona State team. The offense is led by Ielan Bradley, who leads the team with 108 kills and 128 points. Bradley isn't the only Ladyjack that causes problems for opponents, as Izabella Ortiz, Camryn Hill, and Ariana Pagan all have over 80 kills on the season. Ortiz has been a monster lately, as she was just named to the All-Tournament Team for the Lumberjack Classic, as was Bradley. This was Ortiz's third All-Tournament Team of the season. Hill and Pagan are tied for third on the team in kills with 82 each, with Hill's 98 points ranking third on the team and Pagan's 96 coming in a close fourth. On the defensive side, it's Ortiz and Haley Hoang who star for the Ladyjacks. Hoang leads the team with 157 digs, with Pagan coming in second with 125 and Hill being third with 111. Ortiz has been a monster up front, leading the team with 51 total blocks, which rank fifth in the country. The Ladyjacks come into this tournament confident, as they should be, and look to make a statement before conference play.
A Look at the Bearcats:
Sam Houston comes into the tournament with a 6-4 record, and have won two out of their last 3 matches. They are led by McKenzie Morvant, whose 147 points and 123 kills both lead the team. Alyssa Fielder and Hailey Heider have also been good for the Bearcats, both accumulating over 115 points and 100 kills, with Fielder's 118 a close second on the team to Morvant's. On defense, Hannah Baker has been excellent, with her 205 kills leading the team. Morvant also leads the team in blocks with 39, good for .91 blocks per set.
A Look at the Hurricane:
Tulsa enters the tournament this weekend with a 5-3 record, and have won their last three matches. Kayley Cassiday leads the team in both kills and points, and Avery Kalsu leads the Hurricane in assists. Mata Pecall leads them in digs, with Kassiday coming in second, showing her two-way ability. They have two players tied for the team-lead in blocks, and another closely behind in second, so it's mostly a group effort in that department.
A Look at the Rebels:
Ole Miss comes into the weekend with a 5-3 record, and after a three match losing streak to start the season, have rattled off five straight wins. Anna Blair leads the team with 99.5 points and 84 kills. Sasha Ratliff is also productive with 89.5 points and 67 kills, as is Payton Brgoch with 83 points and 65 kills. They form a scary 3-headed monster on offense, and they'll look to continue that. On defense, Cammy Niesen leads the Rebels with 120 digs, and Brgoch is first with 32 blocks. Ratliff also gets into the action with 27 blocks. They have five players in total with over 10 blocks, so they can be tough to get past.
